The following is a review of the Netflix Original Film “The Ridiculous Six”, a Frank Coraci & Adam Sandler film.

Netflix has been great at releasing binge- and stream-worthy content for years. House of Cards, Virunga, and Beasts of No Nation are examples of Netflix bringing excellent original content to screens around the world. Netflix has slipped up before, not every season, documentary or stand-up special works, but I believe that The Ridiculous Six might be the worst thing they’ve ever released as original content. REVIEW: Creed (2015)

The following is a review of ‘Creed’, a Ryan Coogler film.

The boxing saga that is the story of Rocky Balboa is immensely popular, with it having been relevant and present since 1976. Interestingly, we’ve seen a Rocky-film in every decade since John G. Avildsen and Sylvester Stallone first gave the Italian Stallion an opportunity against Apollo Creed in the 1977 Academy Awards Best Picture winner. Creed is a soft reboot of the franchise set 39 years after the events of Rocky, and I was surprised to feel that it might be the best film in the Rocky Balboa-saga. December Update: Marvelous Monday Hiatus & IJR Awards 2015

The following is an update in the form of bullet points on a the Marvelous Monday hiatus and the 2015 version of the IJR Awards list.

  • Box Office Predictions: Remains on hiatus until the end of the year.
  • Marvelous Monday: Goes on hiatus for the rest of the year to make room for coverage of Creed, Star Wars, and the IJR Awards.
  • 2016 Schedule: Expect an announcement in early 2016 on the changing schedule of Box Office Predictions, Motion Picture Thoughts, Dagobah Day, and Marvelous Monday.
  • IJR Awards 2015: As addressed in a previous post, all sports related and some game related awards have been discontinued. Instead the Rising Star (in film) & Television Episode of the Year awards have been created. Expect award winners to be announced as the month progresses.

2016 is a huge year for comic book movies, and especially for the two biggest comic book companies: Marvel and DC. We have X-Men: Apocalypse, Captain America: Civil War, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad. But don’t forget about Doctor Strange. While it’s definitely the film the least number of people are buzzing about, it might just be the most interesting of them all. This is supposedly Marvel’s Fantasia. REVIEW: Sicario (2015)

The following is a review of ‘Sicario’, a Denis Villeneuve film.

I had a lot of expectations going into the theater to watch Sicario. The spectacular cast isn’t the only thing you should be excited about. Denis Villeneuve, the director, is one of the hottest new directors in the world. His last three films (Prisoners; Enemy; Incendies) have been some of my favorites in the years that they’ve been released, and Villeneuve is directing the hotly-anticipated Blade Runner sequel soon. In short, I expected Sicario to be one of the best films this year – I was not disappointed.

REVIEW: Crimson Peak (2015)

The following is a review of ‘Crimson Peak’, a Guillermo Del Toro film.

Guillermo Del Toro is a fastidious filmmaker, and has been known to master the horrific and the gothic in both his writing and directing. Del Toro is also a visually focused director, and Del Toro is at his best when he is able to build his storytelling on the strength of a beautiful set. Why am I telling you this? Because it pleases me to say that Del Toro is back. Having now seen Crimson Peak, it pleases me to state that Guillermo Del Toro has not crafted a more beautiful world since his 2006 fantasy masterpiece, Pan’s Labyrinth. REVIEW: The Martian (2015)

The following is a review of The Martian, a Ridley Scott film.

In 2011, Andy Weir self-published his first ever novel, The Martian. The Martian was envisioned as a very realistic science fiction novel, and it eventually became quite a hit. Then, in 2013, 20th Century Fox optioned the film rights, with Drew Goddard announced as the scriptwriter, and, later, Ridley Scott was announced as the director. One now hoped that Goddard’s talent and Scott’s experience could make The Martian a solid film. Thankfully, it is much more than that – The Martian is one of the best films of 2015.
