REVIEW: Steve Jobs (2015)

Theatrical Release Poster – Universal Pictures

The following is a review of Steve Jobs, a Danny Boyle and Aaron Sorkin film.

A couple of years ago, I sat down in a movie theater to watch Joshua Michael Stern’s Jobs, starring Ashton Kutcher. At best, Jobs was an okay film, with a good performance from Ashton Kutcher. Jobs, however, wasn’t memorable at all, and I doubt that I’ll ever see that film again. Tonight I saw Steve Jobs, Aaron Sorkin and Danny Boyle’s take on the late Apple co-founder. I am happy to say that it is much better than Stern’s version. Continue reading “REVIEW: Steve Jobs (2015)”

REVIEW: The Revenant (2015)

Theatrical Release Poster – 20th Century Fox

The following is a review of The Revenant (2015).

The Revenant was my original pick for my most anticipated film of the 2015 Oscar-season. I was looking forward to the stylistic approach, DiCaprio’s performance, and to see Iñarritu and Lubezki work together again. Now that I have seen the film, I regret to inform you that while the stylistic approach is admirable, this is not a film that I will be recommending. Continue reading “REVIEW: The Revenant (2015)”

REVIEW: Mozart in the Jungle – Season Two (2015)

Mozart in the Jungle - Review

The following is a review of the second season of Amazon Studio’s Mozart in the Jungle, available on Amazon Video, and on Viaplay in Denmark.

When Mozart in the Jungle won the Golden Globe for ‘Best Series – Musical or Comedy’ in 2016, I have to admit that I was a bit stunned. I had never heard of the show, but I was intrigued by it when I saw Gael García Bernal grab his award for ‘Best Actor – Musical or Comedy’. Bernal was the guy I chose to binge-watch both seasons in three days for, and season two of Mozart in the Jungle really relies heavily on his performance and character. Mozart in the Jungle: Season Two is really, really good. Continue reading “REVIEW: Mozart in the Jungle – Season Two (2015)”

Reaction to the 88th Academy Award Nominations – Motion Picture Thoughts #5

MOTION PICTURE THOUGHTS

The Academy has announced what films are worthy to call themselves the best of 2015. The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Martian were shown a lot of love in the nomination process, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens did get a handful of nominations as well. Now, let’s look at the nominations and discuss the odd Oscar snubs and the nominations that caught some by surprise. Predicting the Nominees for the 88th Academy Awards – Motion Picture Thoughts #4

MOTION PICTURE THOUGHTS

By this time tomorrow we will know which films will battle for some of the biggest awards in western cinema. One of my favorite days of the year is when the Academy announces the nominees. Cinephiles always have opinions about award snubs, and I’m always excited to take part in that conversation. This year it’ll probably end up being The Revenant versus Spotlight for the big awards, but don’t be surprised if the Academy shows a lot of love for either Mad Max: Fury Road or The Martian. Let’s try to predict the nominees! Continue reading “Predicting the Nominees for the 88th Academy Awards – Motion Picture Thoughts #4”

REVIEW: Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

Theatrical Poster – The Force Awakens

The following is a spoiler-free review of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, directed by J. J. Abrams.

Set three decades after Return of the Jedi, Star Wars: The Force Awakens follows the scavenging Rey (played by Daisy Ridley); the best pilot in the Resistance, Poe Dameron (played by Oscar Isaac); and a troubled stormtrooper, Finn (played by John Boyega), as they are suddenly thrown into a galaxy-wide search for someone or something… That is all I’ll say about the general plot of the film, which does feature the original three characters that we know and love. Star Wars is back! Continue reading “REVIEW: Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens”

I’m Jeffrey Rex Awards 2015: Nominations Announced

It’s about time for the third annual I’m Jeffrey Rex Awards! Writing it like that makes it sound super silly and serious all at the same time – don’t worry, I realize that! This year there are a total of 18 awards or titles. Each title has a maximum number of five nominees, and a minimum of three.

Today, in this post, I’m revealing the entire list of nominees, before returning with the official IJR Awards 2015 presentation on Monday the 21st of December. I had considered presenting the titles on the 18th of December, but due to the fact that I want spoilers for The Force Awakens to stay at a minimum on this site, I will not give myself the possibility of speaking in spoiler-language until the Monday after its release.

Speaking of Star Wars, I’ll be seeing it on the 16th of December, and due to the franchise’s place in my heart I’ll reserve a spot in each relevant category for The Force Awakens. Continue reading “I’m Jeffrey Rex Awards 2015: Nominations Announced”
