We Need to Talk about Film Directors and Their Relationship with AI | Special Features

Hollywood has long waged a war with generative artificial intelligence, i.e., the “group of AI algorithms and models that are capable of producing new content, including texts, images, videos and problem-solving strategies, with human-like creativity and adaptability,” as defined in a journal article from the National Science Review in 2025. Generative artificial intelligence has often been criticized for using publicly available images, audio, and writing as training data to create its output, which many naturally consider to be stealing human work. There have naturally been notable strikes in Tinseltown over protecting human-created design, performance, or writing, as well as protecting the human jobs and roles that AI threatens to change or completely erase. But, back when the Screen Actors’ Guild and the Writers Guild of America were striking, they were noticeably without their brothers and sisters in the director’s chair from the DGA (Directors Guild of America), so to speak. That’s because DGA reached an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) without ensuring the other parties had seats at the table. So, while the DGA ensured that its members would not be replaced by technological advances, other Hollywood creatives had to pound the pavement and strike. It was a huge story at the time in 2023, and the DGA came under heavy fire for the way they went about it. Now, three years later, individual directors are again making decisions on their own that may have an impact on the entire industry. Though this time around, notable directors are opening the door for generative AI in ways that feel anathema to the collaborative creative processes involved with filmmaking. As if that wasn’t bad enough, we’re not just talking about a few notable directors. Rather, we’re now starting to talk about some of the biggest names in Hollywood. It’s shocking, and we need to talk about why this is happening and what it means both for their legacy and for Hollywood as a whole.

Double Feature: Jack O’Connell – Special Features #72

A couple of weekends ago, I noticed that two films that had been on my watchlist for a very long time had been released on HBO Nordic. What these two films had in common was their lead actor. Both films featured British actor Jack O’Connell prominently. O’Connell is a BAFTA Award-winning young actor who I had previously only seen in the British horror flick Eden Lake, so I didn’t know a lot about him. Therefore I spent the weekend checking out both films to familiarize myself with one of Britain’s finest actors of his generation. Look for the Light: The Last of Us: Part II is a Truly Special Game

In 2013, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us — my favorite video game ever made —  was released exclusively on PlayStation 3 (it was later remastered on PlayStation 4) to near-universal praise and numerous accolades. On the surface-level, this was a survival horror game in the zombie sub-genre. But it was also so much more than that. It was a story about love and rediscovering something to fight for. Gamers primarily played as Joel Miller (Troy Baker), a smuggler without scruples, who was tasked with transporting a young girl, Ellie (Ashley Johnson), across the United States for the purpose of crafting a vaccine to the fungal virus that had turned infected humans into ruthless barely-human creatures without rational thought. Snyder Cut: Zack Snyder’s Justice League is on its way to HBO MAX – Special Features #70

During a watch-along of his film Man of Steel, today — May 20th, 2020 — director Zack Snyder, alongside his wife and creative partner Deborah Snyder, announced that, in 2021, Warner Bros. will, finally, ‘release the Snyder cut’ of Justice League (2017) on HBO MAX. DC Comics’ vocal fan base has been heard. 93rd Oscars: New Eligibility Requirements and a ‘New’ Category – Special Features #69

The coronavirus pandemic has had a serious impact on the film industry. Universal has pulled several films from their theatrical release schedule and made them available on-demand, and, allegedly, they have found a lot of success with the VOD release of Trolls World Tour. Meanwhile, we still don’t know when theaters all over the world will reopen. It could take several weeks, but it could also take several months. Your guess could be as good as mine. As a direct result of the coronavirus pandemic, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ (AMPAS) Board of Governors has approved several noteworthy rule changes that, among other things, change which films are eligible for the 93rd Academy Awards. On March 5th, I wrote an article about the announcement that the 25th Eon-produced James Bond film, NO TIME TO DIE, was postponed to November 2020 to minimize the risk of infection at movie theaters all over the world and to ensure commercial success. Parasite Won Best Picture and Made History – Special Features #62

What happened at the 92nd Academy Awards was incredible. Just ask most Oscar experts and they will agree. This was, based on statistics and precursor awards results, supposed to be Sam Mendes’ and 1917‘s night. Though I desperately wanted Parasite to win all of the night’s biggest awards, my head was telling me no. Therefore, in my final predictions, I went with the safe bet and said 1917 would win Best Director and Best Picture. I’ve never been so happy to be wrong about an Oscar-prediction. In the end, the latest South Korean masterpiece — Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite — won the night’s two biggest awards (as well as two other prestigious golden statuettes). The Academy made the right choice. This time, in my opinion, the Best Picture winner is actually the best film of the year. The Academy finally got it right, as they say. 2020 Watchlist: Eight Danish Films To Look Forward To – Special Features #60

I think 2019 was a very good year for Danish films. Sure, the great Danish selection, Dronningen (int. title: Queen of Hearts), was not nominated in the Best International Feature Film-category at the Oscars, but it was one of several noteworthy Danish films from 2019. There were exciting debut films, as well as strong follow-ups from proven filmmakers. But here’s the thing. I think 2020 is going to be even better.
