On March 5th, I wrote an article about the announcement that the 25th Eon-produced James Bond film, NO TIME TO DIE, was postponed to November 2020 to minimize the risk of infection at movie theaters all over the world and to ensure commercial success. Since then, as I predicted, the theatrical releases of several films including, but not limited to, A Quiet Place: Part II, Mulan, The New Mutants, and Fast and Furious 9 have been postponed.
Production companies like Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. and others have suspended production on series and films all over the world, and the most high profile sports leagues (such as the NBA, the Premier League, and the prestigious annual UEFA tournaments) have been suspended as well. In fact, the vast majority of sports leagues have been suspended, at the exact moment that countries are deciding to close restaurants, bars, and movie theaters. If you are asking yourself what you should do now that every activity that you love has been suspended, then I have one simple suggestion for you. Just stay at home.
If you don’t need to work, then stay at home. It is as simple as that. At this moment, it is important that you avoid large gatherings and public events to ‘flatten the curve,’ as they say. Slow the spread of the disease. Try your hardest not to put anyone in danger. If you know someone whose lives are especially threatened by the coronavirus pandemic, then stay away from them. Keep your distance, and call them instead, if at all possible. It is important that all of us show caution, and one of the best ways to do that right now is to stay at home, if at all possible.
Like I’ve written before, your priority should be health and safety. So, even if a theater near you is open, I don’t think it is wise for you to attend screenings. Just stay at home, watch Netflix, have something to drink, and, to quote Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead, wait for all of this to blow over. Perhaps you can finally binge-watch that one series that you always said that you would get to someday. Now you can binge-watch all of the post-apocalyptic films, or maybe watch Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion like everyone else is doing. In any case, just stay at home and stay safe. Practice social distancing.
