LAST WEEKEND’S NUMBERS
- The Martian (1st Wknd) – $54m
- Hotel Transylvania 2 (-31.5%) – $33m
- Sicario (1st Wknd – Wide) – $12m
- The Intern (-34.1%) – $11,6m
- Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (-45.3%) – $7,8m
Last weekend I got every member of the top five correct, sadly not in the right order – as I had Sicario and The Intern flipped around. Notice how much The Martian made. Just one million less than Gravity, but seven million more than Interstellar – huge opening for Ridley Scott and his film. The solid $12 million wide opening for Sicario is also notable, but last weekend was pretty predictable.
WEEKEND PREDICTIONS
- The Martian – $39m
- Pan (1st Wknd) – $22m
- Hotel Transylvania 2 – $16m
- The Walk (Wide Expansion) – $7m
- The Intern – $6m
The Martian should have a very strong second weekend, just like Gravity did – and I don’t think $39 million is that unrealistic for Scott’s film. I have a bad feeling about Pan. The film had a gigantic production budget, and a low-20 million opening is really bad for the Joe Wright-film. Hotel Transylvania 2 will have another solid weekend, while the interesting battle will be between Sicario, The Walk, and The Intern. I think DeNiro’s film will take the fifth place, but the wide expansion of The Walk might take out Sicario.
What do you predict for this weekend’s North American box office numbers? Am I way off? Sound off in the comments.
