It’s time for another Top Ten Tuesday. I’m still getting through the best heroes of this decade, and we’ve reached 2015. Do note that these characters aren’t solely ranked on how heroic their actions are. Also, some heroes may not be traditional heroes. In fact, this list includes groups of heroes too. Without further ado, here are the top ten movie heroes of 2015. Reaction to the 88th Academy Award Nominations – Motion Picture Thoughts #5

MOTION PICTURE THOUGHTS

The Academy has announced what films are worthy to call themselves the best of 2015. The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, and The Martian were shown a lot of love in the nomination process, but Star Wars: The Force Awakens did get a handful of nominations as well. Now, let’s look at the nominations and discuss the odd Oscar snubs and the nominations that caught some by surprise. Predicting the Nominees for the 88th Academy Awards – Motion Picture Thoughts #4

MOTION PICTURE THOUGHTS

By this time tomorrow we will know which films will battle for some of the biggest awards in western cinema. One of my favorite days of the year is when the Academy announces the nominees. Cinephiles always have opinions about award snubs, and I’m always excited to take part in that conversation. This year it’ll probably end up being The Revenant versus Spotlight for the big awards, but don’t be surprised if the Academy shows a lot of love for either Mad Max: Fury Road or The Martian. Let’s try to predict the nominees! Continue reading “Predicting the Nominees for the 88th Academy Awards – Motion Picture Thoughts #4”

I’m Jeffrey Rex Awards 2015: Nominations Announced

It’s about time for the third annual I’m Jeffrey Rex Awards! Writing it like that makes it sound super silly and serious all at the same time – don’t worry, I realize that! This year there are a total of 18 awards or titles. Each title has a maximum number of five nominees, and a minimum of three.

Today, in this post, I’m revealing the entire list of nominees, before returning with the official IJR Awards 2015 presentation on Monday the 21st of December. I had considered presenting the titles on the 18th of December, but due to the fact that I want spoilers for The Force Awakens to stay at a minimum on this site, I will not give myself the possibility of speaking in spoiler-language until the Monday after its release.

Speaking of Star Wars, I’ll be seeing it on the 16th of December, and due to the franchise’s place in my heart I’ll reserve a spot in each relevant category for The Force Awakens. Continue reading “I’m Jeffrey Rex Awards 2015: Nominations Announced”

REVIEW: The Martian (2015)

20th Century Fox – Theatrical Release Poster – The Martian

The following is a review of The Martian, a Ridley Scott film.

In 2011, Andy Weir self-published his first ever novel, The Martian. The Martian was envisioned as a very realistic science fiction novel, and it eventually became quite a hit. Then, in 2013, 20th Century Fox optioned the film rights, with Drew Goddard announced as the scriptwriter, and, later, Ridley Scott was announced as the director. One now hoped that Goddard’s talent and Scott’s experience could make The Martian a solid film. Thankfully, it is much more than that – The Martian is one of the best films of 2015.
