It is finally here! Lucasfilm just released this trailer, which is believed to be the final full-length trailer for the first Star Wars spin-off film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters; Godzilla). It finally gives us a good look at Jyn Erso’s father, and we get a little bit more of Darth Vader!
If you’re looking for a recap of the teaser or the first full-length official trailer, then they are both up on this site. Now, let us, as always, first note what was said in the newest trailer for the biggest film franchise in the world.
GALEN ERSO (Mads Mikkelsen): Jyn, whatever I do. I do it to protect you. Say you understand.
YOUNG JYN ERSO (Unclear): I understand.
UNKNOWN REBEL (Unclear): You wanna get out of here? (This bit is very difficult to hear, but that’s what I’m getting from it. At first, I thought this was Diego Luna, but now I’m not so sure.)
MON MOTHMA (Genevieve O’Reilly): Our Rebellion is all that remains to push back the Empire. We think you can help us. (That last line is a bit iffy. I’m not sure if it’s Mothma or not.)
CASSIAN ANDOR (Diego Luna): When was the last time you were in contact with your father?
JYN ERSO (Felicity Jones): What is this?
MON MOTHMA (Genevieve O’Reilly): It appears he is critical to the development of a superweapon.
JYN ERSO (Felicity Jones): If my father built this thing, we need to find him.
BAZE MALBUS (Jiang Wen): Alright, how many do we need?
K-2SO (Alan Tudyk): They are requesting a call sign.
BODHI ROOK (Riz Ahmed): It’s, um, Rogue. Rogue One!
ORSON KRENNIC (Ben Mendelsohn): The power that we are dealing with here is immeasureable.
UNKNOWN REBEL LEADER (Unclear): If the Empire has this kind of power, what chance do we have?
JYN ERSO (Felicity Jones): We have hope. Rebellions are built on hope! They have no idea we’re coming.
CHIRRUT ÎMWE (Donnie Yen): Take hold of this moment. The Force is strong.
CASSIAN ANDOR (Diego Luna): Ten men feel like a hundred.
JYN ERSO (Felicity Jones): We’ll take the next chance. And the next too. You’re all Rebels aren’t you?
SAW GERRERA (Forest Whitaker): Save the Rebellion, save the dream.
Some very interesting quotes here, but some of them were pretty difficult to hear due to the music. There are three actors here that I’m not sure of, which is a shame. I’m actually really happy that we got to see, and hear, both Mikkelsen and Ahmed speak in this trailer, which also confirmed that Mikkelsen won’t get the Max Von Sydow treatment (getting killed off in the first five minutes of the film).
The call sign thing didn’t completely work for me, but I was just happy to hear Ahmed speak. Also, Mendelsohn’s delivery of ‘power’ was a tad extreme (it would be normal for the Emperor, but this guy isn’t Sidious), but maybe it’ll work better when we see it in the movie. Now, with that out of the way – let’s take a look at the visuals.
First up, here is a shot of young Jyn Erso speaking with her father, Galen – played by Mads Mikkelsen. I wonder how big a part their relationship will play into the film, considering she’s been on her own since she was fifteen (I believe that’s what one of the previous trailers told us). This is the first real flashback in a Star Wars movie, actually. Unless you think of the vision that Rey had in The Force Awakens as a flashback.
Here we have the guy I’ve been waiting for. Mads Mikkelsen is one of my favorite actors out there, and to finally see him in a Star Wars movie is making me even more excited for the full film. Here he is meeting with Krennic and a group of Death Troopers. I presume that this is where they take him in as a prisoner, or something like that.
Here young Jyn is again. Now, let’s speculate. She’s clearly hiding here – probably from the Death Troopers. Let’s say that Galen has been taken into custody by Krennic, then maybe the Death Troopers are killing his family and burning his land. Jyn, then, escapes somehow.
Now, what do we have here? We may not have any Jedi in this film, but this sure looks like some Jedi sculpture in the sands of the Jedha moon.
Here we see Galen at the time of the Rebellion. He’s walking up to Krennic. It doesn’t look like he’s wearing prison clothes or anything. Actually, this could be Imperial clothing. So not a prisoner, per se? Here’s a guess. Galen is the leader of this Imperial base, and Krennic is checking up on how they are doing. There’s another shot later that is connected to this scene, I believe.
This is the first time we see Vader in this trailer. I’m guessing this is from the same scene as the Vader shot from the last trailer.
Here we see an over the shoulder shot of Krennic passionately speaking to Vader. I want to know so much more about this relationship.
Here we have Cassian, Jyn, and K-2SO infiltrating an Imperial base. I’m guessing that this is the base where Galen is at, but who knows.
Here we have Riz Ahmed’s Bodhi Rook. I find this shot to be really, really sad. I’m speculating, of course, but this looks like the face of a man who knows that he is about to be taken in by the Empire or killed. He looks like he is without hope.
Another shot of Vader and Krennic together. I don’t know why, but I have a feeling Vader is pretty unhappy here. Don’t upset him, Krennic!
Here we have Galen again. I’m guessing this is what happens after the shot where Galen is walking towards Krennic on the Imperial base. Maybe Krennic found out that Galen has been in contact with the rebels.
And that’s really the final shot I want to highlight from this Galen-heavy trailer. Again, I’m happy with how they’re showing Vader in the trailers. I don’t expect him to be in the film for a very long time. But his presence is enough to highlight how serious this mission is.
Hopefully, Vader is doing something cooler than walking into a room in the full film, but this is enough to get us excited about Vader again, without showing too much. I’m also loving the fact that they’re giving us a lot of Galen here. I’m a big fan of Mikkelsen, so that was something I had been waiting for. I’m so excited for Rogue One.
