The following is a quick review of Christopher Guest’s Mascots – a Netflix Original Film.
In the newest Netflix Original Film – Christopher Guest’s Mascots – we follow and are introduced to several teams of sports mascots that are about to attend the World Mascot Association championship, all hoping to win the coveted Gold Fluffy Award.
I had actually been looking forward to this film. I really enjoy getting these, at times, unique Netflix Original Films once in a while, and Mascots was one I really thought could’ve been cool. I like the idea of an ensemble mockumentary with people like Zach Woods, Jane Lynch, and Ed Begley, Jr. But this didn’t work for me.
I didn’t find it as funny as I thought it would be, and I was really let down with this one. I liked Zach Woods, Sarah Baker, and Chris O’Dowd. But that’s pretty much it. A lot of humor falls flat and the characters just don’t feel all that original.
It also spends way too much time introducing all of the mascots, and when you finally get to the competition – 20 minutes, or so, into the film – you may have already dozed off or lost interest, even though the introduction scenes were probably my favorite scenes in the film.
I really grew tired of what I felt was a tedious mockumentary, and that is a real shock to me. I don’t think this would be a great rewatch, and I don’t think it is memorable at all. Mascots missed the mark.
