It’s finally here! I’ve been really excited for the first Anthology Film in the Star Wars canon, and Rogue One is that film. It tells the story of how the Rebel Alliance got the plans to the Death Star. Basically, this is one of the most intriguing stories to tell around the time of the original trilogy. So, watch the trailer, come back to this page, and then let’s go over some of the shots in the trailer.
This is the shot that really sets up most of the trailer. Meet Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones), the woman with her back turned towards us, who has been apprehended by the Rebel Alliance, it seems, and she is meeting with Mon Mothma and this other guy (sorry guy). I think that they probably offer her a way to undone what she has done, by fighting for their cause with a selected squad of warriors to get the plans to the Death Star. I think that’s what they’re getting at. There’s also a pretty good shot of Diego Luna right around here.
Now, this is a really cool shot. The Death Star is being finished, and this shadow shot is so scary and awesome. I guess they’re going to have to be quick about getting the plans, because it seems very ready to strike on any and all enemies. The ominous battle alarm siren/horn-thing that you hear at the end of the trailer is from the Death Star, and it’s going to be cool to see what it gets to do.
Ben Mendelsohn is here! Mendelsohn is a great actor – go check out Bloodline on Netflix if you are unfamiliar with him – and it looks like he may be the main antagonist outside of Darth Vader (who I presume is in this film). He’s wearing Grand Admiral garb, which I find very, very cool.
Okay, so, I’m not sure when this is in the film. It’s probably either on an Imperial ship or the Death Star itself, but our protagonists are being chased by stormtroopers. Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is running with a guy that I think is Diego Luna, but I’m not quite sure about that. Look at the droid behind them, he’s actually shown earlier in the trailer behind Erso. I believe that is the droid that Alan Tudyk voices, but I’m not sure that has been confirmed.
Meet Donnie Yen’s character. We don’t really know a lot about him, but I believe his character is blind. So the fact that he is taking down stormtroopers down with a stick makes him a badass. I can’t wait to see what this character is all about. Just a second prior to that shot you see the stormtroopers not really doing all that much about Yen. I presume they underestimate him, due to the fact that he is blind.
Okay, so this is weird. You see the classic red imperial guards in the background, probably guarding the Emperor, you would think. Now the guy with his back turned towards us is interesting due to the fact that he kneels. No, I don’t think it is the Emperor. No, I don’t think it is Darth Vader. I think that is the Emperor’s Shadow Guard. A black-caped imperial guard sent out to wipe out the Jedi, I believe. I think that I am right about this guy being a Shadow Guard, but who knows?
This is the coolest shot in the trailer. The AT-ATs (Update: apparently these are AT-ACTs. The more you know.) are really spectacular, and to see them in this kind of landscape is really cool and different. I can’t wait to see this kind of battle. This truly is a war film. I wish we had seen Mads Mikkelsen in the trailer, but I’m sure we’ll see him in the next trailer. Gareth Edwards seems to be doing an awesome job with this film. I can’t wait.
This was a special Dagobah Day due to the release of the trailer. Dagobah Day normally posts on the first Monday of every month. Feel free to suggest topics in the comments below.
