Will Suicide Squad Be A Success? – Detective Comics Saturday #6

DC Saturday - Rebirth

Suicide Squad is the next film in the DC Cinematic Universe, and even though the superhero genre is the most popular genre in this century so far, DC/WB have had some trouble in kickstarting their cinematic universe. Man of Steel was polarizing, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was critically panned, but what about Suicide Squad? It will be the first DC Cinematic Universe film without Kal-El (you assume), does that then mean it’ll work? Will Suicide Squad be a success?  Continue reading “Will Suicide Squad Be A Success? – Detective Comics Saturday #6”

The Future of the DC Cinematic Universe – Detective Comics Saturday #5

DC Saturday - Rebirth

Detective Comics Saturday is back! On the first Saturday of every month you’ll now see me discuss topics related to DC Comics or the DC Cinematic Universe.

I’m so happy to be back writing about everything DC! Now, after the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we have to readjust and get ready for the next film in the DC Cinematic Universe (I refuse to call it the DCEU) – David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. But with two WB/DC films having been released – with both of them receiving mixed reviews (to put it nicely) – we might also have to rethink the future of the universe. So, today I answer four questions that I have been thinking about since I saw Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – let’s get to it! REVIEW: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

Theatrical Release Poster – Warner Bros.

The following is a spoiler-free review of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a Zack Snyder film.

Batman v Superman is finally here! Comic book fans have been wanting to see this film for decades, and moviegoers have been waiting for a proper sequel to Man of Steel since 2013. Somehow this film had to appease both audiences. My complicated history with Man of Steel has been heavily documented on this blog, and I don’t think I’ve really loved a Zack Snyder-film since his remake of Dawn of the Dead.

Needless to say, I was really worried about this film. Superman used to be one of my favorite comic book characters, and Batman still is one of my favorites – I want them to be given a proper treatment on the big screen. I just wanted to like it – that is all I wanted from this film. But, to be perfectly honest, I did not. At least not all of it.  Continue reading “REVIEW: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)”

Favorite Thespians #3 – Ben Affleck

Favorite Thespians - Ben Affleck

In honor of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice being released in March, I am moving my Favorite Thespians-schedule around a bit. For one time only, Favorite Thespians is being released the day before I’m seeing the thespian’s latest film. This time it’s all about Ben Affleck!

Favorite Thespians is a monthly opinion piece wherein I name one of my favorite actors or actresses. Favorite Thespians contains three separate sections: one section on the first film I saw the thespian in (“On My Radar”), another section on 5 films you need to see to know the thespian (“Homework”), and a section on my favorite performance from him/her.

With the two big comic book companies releasing their two biggest comic books, I’ve decided to give you the first of many Quick Comic Book Reviews. Though the reviews won’t spoil the single issues, already known facts from the series can be spoiled. Continue reading “Quick Comic Book Reviews – Week of August 12, 2015”

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Comic Con 2015 Trailer Review

The first Batman v Superman teaser didn’t really interest me. Sure, yes, it was very brief – but we didn’t see anything that really gave me faith for the film. I love Batman, I’ve lost a lot of love for Superman over the years – so this trailer really had to give me a strong show of the Caped Crusader. I am happy to say that this trailer made me a believer of this project. Continue reading “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Comic Con 2015 Trailer Review”

REVIEW: Batman (Vol. 2) #40

By Writer Scott Snyder & Artist Greg Capullo – DC Comics

The following is a full written review of Batman (Vol. 2) #40 – Written by Scott Snyder, with art by Greg Capullo – Release: April 29th 2015.

This is it. Endgame’s final chapter. One of the sad things about the business of journalism is that some sites chose to reveal spoilers from the next issue online – and that sparked a debate. Some may have an idea of what’s about to happen going in, but I’m glad to say that this issue works. This comic book review is spoiler free – rejoice. Continue reading “REVIEW: Batman (Vol. 2) #40”

Detective Comics Saturday #4 – The Next Joker

Detective Comics Saturday
For the uninitiated: This is a new weekly feature on the blog wherein I, I’m Jeffrey Rex, discuss all things DC. This is a test-run, however. Meaning that if this goes well, it’ll be a permanent fixture on I’m Jeffrey Rex in 2015, like Marvelous Monday is right now.

A couple of days ago I decided to jot down my thoughts on the casting of the new Joker, as well as talk about which actors I really wanted for the role. I’d like to preface this discussion by stating that Jared Leto was one of the actors I’d like for the role, but I never thought he’d do it, seeing as he loves touring with his band. Detective Comics Saturday #3 – The Movie We Deserve!

Today I’ve decided to write about that one movie we deserve. That one film that DC and Warner Bros. just have to release at some point. They actually owe us this one film. So what might that one be? Well, it’s not present anywhere on the released list of films in the shared universe.

I am, of course, talking about the movie Nightwing. My first favorite DC character was the original Robin – Dick Grayson. He, of course, ended up becoming Nightwing – and he has had a number of different jobs or position since.

But why do they owe us the film? Well, in 1995 a little film called Batman Forever was released – it wasn’t very good, but it gave us a new Robin on the big screen. They followed that one up with, perhaps, the worst big-budget movie ever made. Batman and Robin – I hate that film. So yes, they owe us a proper Dick Grayson portrayal – smart, dark, late 20s/early 30s. Grayson away from Wayne. Give it to us. Continue reading “Detective Comics Saturday #3 – The Movie We Deserve!”
