The Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens has begun! On this week’s Quick Comic Book Reviews, I am looking at Shattered Empire #1 and Batman #44.
- Batman, Volume 2, Issue 44 – Written by Scott Snyder, Art by Jock.
This issue is what you could call a one-off. A flashback featuring different art. Definitely not unimportant, but a moment to breathe – a moment to expand on the story of Mr. Bloom. The story is set after the Zero Year- arc, and Batman is trying to figure out why some kid has been found dead out in the middle of nowhere.
Now, this style-change is drastic. It doesn’t look anything like what we’ve seen with Capullo, and I did miss his artwork. But Jock’s style is very unqiue, I’d say. And it definitely works in the Snyder-Batman world.
With that having been said, the story didn’t do much for me – and I do wish they could’ve told this story in a different way. I’m not sure ‘flashing back’ like this was the best idea. I definitely wasn’t a fan of the change of pace here, but I’m really excited about where this story is going.
Issue Grade: B
- Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Shattered Empire, Issue 1 – Written by Greg Rucka, Art by Marco Checchetto.
First things first – the artwork is great. The characters look just fine, but the world is excellent. Everything just looks right – taken right out of Return of the Jedi.
The biggest piece of information this issue gave us was that one of the newly introduced main characters of Shattered Empire might be related to one of the new characters in The Force Awakens (Nope, won’t spoil it here). This specific character is someone I’m really excited about, so this issue really intrigued me in a great way.
Now, I did feel that the issue was too short – but, overall, this is a great first issue, and I cannot wait to see what the new and old characters get up to in the next issue.
Issue Grade: B+
