REVIEW: True Detective – “Church In Ruins”

True Detective Review

The following is a review of “Church In Ruins” from the second season of True Detective, beware of spoilers.

“Church In Ruins” had quite a job to do for the season to still be appealing. Most critics have felt that this season has had a tough time in comparisons with its predecessor. It hasn’t been as interesting or exciting, nor as strong in performance, writing or direction. This episode had to have strong performances, and it also had to move towards an end for the season. Thankfully, “Church In Ruins” is the best episode of season 2 yet. Continue reading “REVIEW: True Detective – “Church In Ruins””

REVIEW: Ant-Man (2015)

Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios’ poster for Ant-Man (2015).

The following is a spoiler-free review of Marvel’s Ant-Man (2015).

We’ve reached the final film of Marvel Studios‘ Phase Two – Ant-Man is here. If this sounds like Marvel has gone for one of the most obscure comic books they’ve ever done, then you’re not entirely wrong. The general public wouldn’t be that familiar with the character, but he is not unimportant – his film is much more than a stopgap between Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Captain America 3 – in fact, this origin story is a breath of fresh air for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. REVIEW: True Detective – “Other Lives”

True Detective Review

The following is a review of “Other Lives” from the second season of True Detective, beware of spoilers.

Just like last season of True Detective, this season has a point in which the show reboots itself. A point where the case is reopened, and all answers from the first half of the season are called into question by our main characters. This was the episode that rebooted the second season of True Detective – and it did so in an interesting fashion. Continue reading “REVIEW: True Detective – “Other Lives””

REVIEW: True Detective – “Down Will Come”

True Detective Review

The following is a review of “Down Will Come” from the second season of True Detective, beware of spoilers.

We’ve reached Jeremy Podeswa’s episode of True Detective, and thus we’re finally halfway through the season. In it we finally get closer to having an idea of what’s happening in the Caspere case, and we get the greatest action sequence of the season. REVIEW: It Follows (2015)

RADiUS-TWC poster for It Follows

To be honest, I wouldn’t really call myself a ‘horror fan’ or ‘horror aficionado,’ even though the rest of my family clearly adores the genre. It Follows, however, was a horror film that intrigued me, due to the fact that the story, in itself, actually resembled a nightmare I’ve had multiple times — one featuring an individual walking towards me ever so slowly with ill intent.

Unfortunately, I didn’t go to the CPH PIX Film festival. I didn’t find time to see it during its wide release in my home country either. Instead, I recently ordered it on Amazon. The Blu-Ray just arrived. When I pressed play, I don’t think I had ever been more excited to review a horror film. Continue reading “REVIEW: It Follows (2015)”

Marvelous Monday #25 – Recast The Avengers

I'm Jeffrey Rex' Marvelous Monday - Recast The Avengers

In May 2012 Marvel Studios released Marvel’s The Avengers in theaters. It would go on to become one of the best ever comic book movies. Along the way it made $1.5 billion worldwide at the box office, and would spawn numerous other cinematic universes for other comic book characters at other studios.

You could argue, however, that a comic book movie is only as good as its leading men and women. But what if Marvel Studios never cast Downey Jr., Hemsworth, Ruffalo, Johansson, Evans, and Renner? Today, on Marvelous Monday, I try to recast the heroes in The Avengers from a pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe perspective. Continue reading “Marvelous Monday #25 – Recast The Avengers”

REVIEW: True Detective – “Maybe Tomorrow”

True Detective ReviewThe following is a review of “Maybe Tomorrow” from the second season of True Detective, beware of spoilers.

The third episode of the second season of True Detective revealed what happened to Velcoro after last week’s cliffhanger. Meanwhile, we learn a lot more about Paul Woodrugh – and Frank Semyon is shakened to the core after more of his people drop to the floor. Continue reading “REVIEW: True Detective – “Maybe Tomorrow””

REVIEW: True Detective – “Night Finds You”

True Detective Review

The following is a review of “Night Finds You” from the second season of True Detective, beware of spoilers.

The second episode of the second arc of True Detective began the ‘partnership’ that we had been waiting for, but also gave us some of the magical speeches that the show perfected in the first season. We had the first real cliffhanger of the season, and suddenly the Caspere-case is much more interesting. But the Fukunaga-less second season is definitely still finding its feet. REVIEW: Terminator Genisys (2015)

Paramount Pictures poster for Terminator Genisys

The following is a short spoiler-free review of Terminator Genisys (2015).

Let me preface review this by saying that I love the James Cameron Terminator-films and that even though the 3rd and 4th entries in the franchise were underwhelming, I’ve been very hopeful for this franchise. In truth, The Sarah Connor Chronicles was the last good entry in the franchise, but audiences didn’t exactly flock to that piece of entertainment content, sadly. I really wanted to like Genisys, this potential new beginning of a fresh Terminator-trilogy. But in the end, I got exactly what I had feared for so long – another subpar Terminator-film.
