Like I suspect many have and will, I found it difficult to watch this film without thinking about the Baz Luhrmann film, Elvis, which was released more than a year prior to this film’s release. Really, though they both feature Elvis and Priscilla, they couldn’t be more different. It’s not just that Elvis is a popular blockbuster from a major studio, while Priscillla was released with much less fanfare by an indie studio. To add to that, while Elvis follows the well-worn music biopic formula albeit with a distinctive kinetic and dizzying visual style, Priscilla is a much more muted film with wildly different aims and approaches to the story of one of the most famous couples in American history.

REVIEW: The Power of the Dog (2021)

Based on the 1967 Thomas Savage novel of the same name, The Power of the Dog is a western drama set in Montana in the 1920s, when the old American west had begun to morph into a new era. While we hear about automobiles and cities at the local inn, the surrounding wide-open landscape and barren mountains still feel distinctly western. It is clear that the world is changing, and some of these changing roles are exemplified in the film’s characters.

REVIEW: On the Rocks (2020)

As most people know, Sofia Coppola is Hollywood royalty. She made appearances in many of her father’s films, before a less-than-stellar supporting performance in The Godfather Part III led to scathing reviews and, not long thereafter, her acting career was over. But Sofia Coppola is not just Hollywood royalty, she is also a terrific filmmaker. Over the years, she has managed to reinvent herself as a great director and for her second film as a director, 2003’s Lost in Translation, Coppola was allegedly inspired by her own relationship with her ex-husband and filmmaker Spike Jonze (Her). Since Lost in Translation, which I think is a beautiful film (as well as her best), it has been difficult not to look at her films as being directly inspired by her own experiences. When I watched On the Rocks, which, like Lost In Translation, features Bill Murray, I started to think about her relationship with both her father and middle-age.
