Top Ten TV-Shows of 2017

Television has never been better than right now in the New Golden Age of Television. 2017 continued that age, or trend, in which television was as effective as, or even more so than, cinema. For some, peak television in 2017 is described best by the return of Twin Peaks, and for others it is best described by shows that are not as iconic as Lynch’s famous show — at least not yet. REVIEW: The Crown – Season Two (2017)

Season 2 Release Poster – Netflix

The following is a review of the second season of The Crown – Available on Netflix.

I explained in my review of the first season how people might be surprised by my reaction to The Crown. I’m not obsessed with the royal family in any country, even though I live in a constitutional monarchy. My interest in The Crown was originally more centered around the inclusion of Sir Winston Churchill in the first season. However, having now seen the second season of The Crown, I must admit that I’ve actually become extremely fascinated with the British royal family. I’m still quite shocked.  Continue reading “REVIEW: The Crown – Season Two (2017)”

REVIEW: Bright (2017)

Release Poster – Netflix

The following is a review of Bright — Directed by David Ayer.

2017 has been a remarkable year for Netflix, in that they’ve given us a handful of great films to be watched in the comfort of our own homes, as well as some great seasons of television. Okja, The Meyerowitz Stories, and Mudbound are terrific Netflix original films. But none of those films were this year’s biggest Netflix risk: Bright, on the other hand, is, and, unfortunately, the first Netflix blockbuster, which reportedly has a budget of $90 million, is a disappointment. REVIEW: Easy – Season Two (2017)

Season 1 Release Poster – Netflix

The following is a short review of the second season of Easy.

Last year, mumblecore filmmaker Joe Swanberg gave us a Chicago-based anthology series on relationships called Easy. While I enjoyed watching the series, I was, admittedly, a little bit disappointed that Easy wasn’t more up my alley. Although the first season’s cast featured several familiar faces, I wasn’t really hooked on the first season. Thankfully, the second season of Easy reveals a better product. REVIEW: Mudbound (2017)

Release Poster – Netflix

The following is a short review of Mudbound – Directed by Dee Rees

Mudbound is a period piece set in the 1940s about two families from opposite sides of the track — the impoverished African-American Jackson family and the white and more wealthy McAllan family — whose paths cross when Henry McAllan (played by Jason Clarke) is the victim of a scam and, as a result, has to move his family, including his racist father (played by Jonathan Banks), to an area unbefitting the lives that they had thought they would lead in Mississippi. Don’t Miss These Films: 2017 Edition – Special Features #11

So, I’ve written a lot of movie reviews so far this year. But there are a lot of films that I’ve seen this year that I never got around to reviewing for one reason or another. Today I want to highlight five films that I wish I had had time to write about. Continue reading “Don’t Miss These Films: 2017 Edition – Special Features #11”

REVIEW: Master of None – Season Two (2017)

Release Poster – Netflix

The following is a review of the second season of Master of None. Available now on Netflix.

At the beginning of the second season of Master of None, Dev Shah (played by Aziz Ansari) has traveled to Italy to learn about a different culture but mostly to become a better pasta chef. He is still trying to get over his relationship with Rachel (played by Noël Wells), but whenever he meets someone new that he likes something always gets in the way. REVIEW: Stranger Things – Season Two (2017)

Release Poster – Netflix

The following is a full review of the second season of Stranger Things. Available now on Netflix.

When I published my short review of the first season of Stranger Things five days after Netflix had released all eight episodes, I had no idea how big of a mainstream hit it would be. Although House of Cards was the first streaming show to appear as more than just a blip on the radar for television aficionados, Stranger Things seems to be the first Netflix show to hold the attention of western audiences the way the biggest AMC and HBO dramas have in previous years. Updated Best Picture Predictions – Special Features #8

This time around I’m changing things up. Last time, my Best Picture predictions were listed in alphabetical order. However, now in October, I’m ready to start ranking them on their chances of getting the golden statue in early 2018. At the end of my listing of the ten predicted nominations, I’ll discuss a number of films that aren’t getting in — including a Weinstein production or two. REVIEW: The Meyerowitz Stories (2017)

Release Poster – Netflix

The following is a review of The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) – Directed by Noah Baumbach

Adam Sandler is a really great actor, when he wants to be one. Every seven or eight years it seems like Sandler lands a role with which he manages to wow even his biggest critics. Normally, when I watch a new Sandler Netflix-film, I am greeted with lazy attempts at humor that sometimes becomes downright offensive in films like The Do-Over and The Ridiculous Six.
