Predicting the 2013/2014 NFL Season

'85 Bears getting their White House opportunity, with Bears fan / POTUS Obama.
’85 Bears getting their White House opportunity, with Bears fan / POTUS Obama.

Look at the picture, what’s the first thing on your mind? My guess is you think, that I’ve said the Bears will win this year; this season. While I’d love that to happen, and I don’t think that’s inpossible, that’s not my prediction. But before I go any further, let me tell you how my predictions work: I start by writing down every game, every week. Then I go over each and every game, and pick a winner for the game in question. That leaves me with a record for every team, following that I predict the playoffs, as it would play out with my predictions in mind. That is how I give you my complete predictions for this NFL Season. Here we go.

AFC EAST

NFL: New York Jets-Minicamp
The most exciting QB ‘battles’ happen in the AFC East this season. Yes, the Brady-division – heck, why not? Let ’em have some fun for once. First and foremost, I have the Buffalo Bills finishing 6-10. The Bills have strengthened their team, and I’m a big fan of E.J. Manuel, but the fact that Jeff Tuel (an undrafted rookie) is starting week one, leaves me worried that they won’t get to 7-9. The battle between Manuel & Kolb was fun, but in the end it sucked. Manuel was clearly better than QB-Journeyman Kevin Kolb. Next up are two disaster teams, that I fear will be nothing more than simple notes, when we look back at this season, one year from now. The teams in question are the New York Jets & the Miami Dolphins, I have them both finishing 3-13… Brace yourselves, fans. The Jets are always fun to watch, not because they’re good, but I imagine lots of drinking games are built on their turnovers and losses. Mark Sanchez battled Geno Smith this pre-season, and it would probaby be smart to start Geno – seeing as Mark Sanchez, clearly, is not the future of the New York Jets. I fear for Rex Ryan, he will have to become a coordinator once again to regain credability. The Dolphins aren’t ‘that’ bad, but they’ve not really improved – and I don’t see them making anything exciting this season. Sorry ‘Phins. Finally, the Patriots look great as always – even with Tim Tebow on their proposed 53-man roster. Danny Amendola will become a great receiver for this team, and they will once again win this division with a record of 14-2.

AFC NORTH

NFL: Preseason-Cincinnati Bengals at Atlanta Falcons
This division is the exact copy of the NFC North, even more than just the ‘north’ part. Every team is so equal, talentwise, and have incredibly intense games and rivalries. I have the Bengals winning this division with a record of 11-5, they win by having the most complete offense in the division. They should be proud of that, seeing as they are in the division of the Super Bowl Champions, the Baltimore Ravens (A team that I called would be in the Super Bowl last year.). Speaking of the Ravens, I have Baltimore getting an AFC Wildcard spot by going 9-7 in a faulty AFC. They have lost a lot of strong players, and I fear they will play catch-up all season. The Pittsburgh Steelers had long been the leaders of this division, but they’ve lost a lot since then – they are no longer who we thought they were. I have them going 7-9. Finally, I have the Cleveland Browns, the ultimate catch-up’ers, going 5-11. Yes, they are improving – but I’m not confident in Chudzinski or Weeden. They have some spots to fill, before they can be good again.

AFC SOUTH

Wild Card Playoffs - Cincinnati Bengals v Houston Texans
Let’s not beat around the bush, Houston Texans are the best team in this division and will once again win. I see them going 13-3, with a strong team and a smart coach. This could be a great year if they learn to play in the playoffs. The other Wildcard team in the AFC are the Indianapolis Colts, I have Andy Luck stepping up once again – and getting them to a record of 10-6. The Anonymous team in this division is the Tennessee Titans, I don’t see them doing much – and I see them finishing 3-13. Sorry Jake Locker, not this year. Finally, the awful Jaguars, with new colours (la-di-da), will finish 1-15. Sad, but that’s how I see it. I liked how Blaine Gabbert did in the Pre-season against the Jets, but then again – that was the Jets… Sorry Shahid Khan (Khaaaaaaaan!).

AFC WEST

Wes Welker Peyton Manning(1)
Welker & Manning = Division winners. Wes Welker is not just created by the Patriots, and he will regain it all this year. This is truly an impressive team, expect to see them A LOT. I have them going 16-0, yes I said that – and get used to reading that. I like the Kansas City Chiefs, there I said it, but why shouldn’t I? Andy Reid + Alex Smith = A great situation. I have them going 8-8, and that could be better if the Broncos fail. The Chargers look really, really bad. They’ve not really improved a lot, sure D.J. Fluker looks good and Manti Te’o could be good. But we’ve only seen bad things from San Diego. I have them going 7-9. Rivers should be shopped around next year. Finally we have the Oakland Raiders. They are just awful, sure Pryor has potential, but they are a BAD team. I have them going 1-15.

NFC EAST

LaxUA
R.G. Three. That dude is just awesome, I’m a fan. I have his Redskins finishing 8-8, and that makes me sad – I desperately want them to win this division. But, in the end, the Giants are too good. Eli will give New York a new Playoff-adventure, by going 12-4. There are two 7-9 teams in this division, the Cowboys & the Eagles. Vick will dominate, but overall his team is not good enough – and the Cowboys are not yet ready for the 4-3 / Tampa 2 defense. I suggest calling Lovie Smith, just don’t make him a Head Coach.

NFC NORTH

Bears+Rookie+Camo+Foo_Furm
The Bears are good with Marc Trestman, and I’m not worried about Marshall’s hip-problems, it will all be good – and Jay will succeed with Marshall, Forte & Jeffery. This season will be good, because of a new O-Line with Long & Mills on the right side, and Bushrod and Slauson on the left. Also, don’t forget about Jon Bostic, that dude is amazing. I have my Bears going 12-4. However, they are NOT winning the division, they are ‘just’ getting a Wildcard spot. The Packers still have the best QB in the NFL, and they will win this division… 15-1… Moving on, the Vikings look good – but too many young/inexperienced players starting. Peterson is not God, and they will only go 6-10. Finally, the Lions will end 2-14. No discipline, fire that coach.

NFC SOUTH

falcons-bengals-practice-football-matt-ryan-steven-jackson_pg_600
Steven Jackson + Matt Ryan + Julio Jones + Roddy White = Best Offense in the NFL. They will win this division, 13-3. The Saints will return as a good team, but nowhere near as strong as Atlanta. N.O. will finish 9-7. The Panthers aren’t ready, and Cam is not mature yet. They will finish 6-10. Finally the Bucs, will finish 3-13. Shop your QB around, build anew.

NFC WEST

Colin Kaepernick
The Strongest Division in Football will once again see the San Francisco 49ers win, this time it’ll be with a record of 16-0. They are perfect. PERFECT. However, the Seahawks are good, and will get a wildcard, by going 10-6. The Rams are still a work in progress, and will finsh 7-9 – while the Arizona Cardinals will go 6-10. Not bad for a ‘rookie’ coach in AZ.

THE PLAYOFFS

kaepernickSB_a7v04e9y_16y2ro9a
The Wildcard round will result in the Bengals beating the Colts, the Texans beating the Ravens. In the NFC The Giants will beat my Bears in New York, sadly… Sigh… And the Falcons will beat Russel Wilson and the Seahawks. In the Divisional round the Broncos will beat the Bengals, The Patriots will beat the Texans. In the NFC the 49ers will beat the Giants, and the Packers will beat the Falcons… Do you see where this is going? No you do not. The AFC Champion will be the Broncos, after a match between Brady and Manning (AWESOME). The NFC Champion will be the 49ers! The Packers will not be able to beat the most exciting QB in the game, and the best Coach in the game. Harbaugh & Kaepernick are on their way to the Super Bowl yet again. Only this time, I see them beating the Manning-led Broncos! Two 16-0 teams, one PERFECT team. The San Francisco 49ers. The Perfect NFL Season? I think so.

9th Stage – Tour de France 2013

Cycling_Tour_de_Fra_766705a

This stage was not really one I was looking forward to, but Movistar changed that completely. After Kennaugh crashed, Movistar took the lead of the Peloton and punished Sky all day – leading to Porte losing  over 10 minutes and Froome being isolated all day. But as Brian Holm has said, it looked more like a race for second place – and that’s because Saxo-Tinkoff didn’t do much; even though Danish TV would like you to think so. In the end it was a strong two man breakaway that fought for the win, unfortunately resulting in our own Jakob Fuglsang being put in second place by Dan Martin.

Sky Pro Cycling
This was a really tough day for Sky, not only was Froome isolated – but Kennaugh crashed, Porte lost his GC placement and Kiryienka was thrown out due to the time limit. This was tough, but through it all Froome was ready. Before the rest day they look shaken, but not broken or bent.

Jakob Fuglsang
Astana actually had a helper for Fuglsang today. Alexey Lutsenko was really good, but in the end it took a Fuglsang attack/breakaway to make us all very excited. Jakob was second on the stage, but deserved to win due to his many leads in the breakaway. Jakob went from 17. GC placement to 12. GC Placement. A nice jump for Jakob.

Jersey
– Froome remains in the Yellow Jersey.
– Quintana remains in the White Jersey.
– Rolland now owns the Polka Dot Jersey.
– Sagan remains in the Green Jersey.

8th Stage – Tour de France 2013

PROFILTDF13E8
The 8th Stage of Le Tour was amazing. It was a stage were the entire GC was shuffled around, and a day where some fell and some arose. Today we will focus on Sky & Jakob as always. But before that, I’d like to make a statement: You are always innocent until proven guilty. Doping is wrong, but you don’t know anything until it’s been proven, so stop this witch hunt.

Sky Pro Cycling
How amazing where Team Sky? Sure some of the riders didn’t do a lot, but wow I loved to see Peter Kennaugh as a Grimpeur. Kennaugh was amazing, as was Porte & Froome. The real story is that Sky completely broke Alberto Contador, who lost 1’45” on the 8th. It will be interesting to see how they react on the 9th, ’cause they are far behind Sky who where just better than everyone.

Jakob Fuglsang
He didn’t have any help, but he managed to make it to 17th on the stage. Impressed. Jakob lost around 3 minutes to Sky, but is still placed well in the GC.

Jerseys
Nairo Quintana in White.
Chris Froome in Yellow.
Chris Froome owns the Polka Dot, worn by Pierre Rolland.
Peter Sagan in Green.

7th Stage – Tour de France 2013

Action

Peter Sagan destroyed his opponents today. Cannondale knew Sagan couldn’t beat Greipel & Cavendish in a direct sprint, so they decided to set a fast pace in the Peloton. It became clear early on that Omega & Lotto had to chase from behind, but after chasing for a long time they gave up – therefore it was an easy win for Peter Sagan. Not much else happened today – We’ve got a new man in the Polka Dot, Adriano Malori Withdrew from the Race & Jens “Jensie” Voigt was in a breakaway. Mark Cavendish was angry today, so everything’s normal. The real drama comes tomorrow, so be ready!

Sky Pro Cycling
They stayed safe during the entire race, they were ready. Edvald Boasson Hagen didn’t win, and he didn’t get the Yellow Jersey; something I think they are quite glad for. They don’t want to defend the jersey this early. Sky looked ready, and looked relaxed. Tomorrow will be their day, for sure. Froome v Contador continues tomorrow.

Jakob Fuglsang
Astana finished in the Top 10 today, and thankfully that’s all we have to say today. They didn’t do much, tomorrow we’ll see what Fuglsang can do on his own. No man withdrew today(Astana).

Jerseys
Peter Sagan is now at 209 points, and has a big lead on André and Mark. Daryl Impey stays in the Yellow jersey, Kwiatkowski in the White – BUT we see a change in the Polka Dot, Biel Kadri is now in the jersey. Expect him to lose it tomorrow!

6th Stage – Tour de France 2013

Cavendish hurt
This is something new to the Blog. During the Tour de France I will be following Team Sky and Jakob Fuglsang on their way through France. After each stage I hope to write a few sentences about what happened in general, and what happened specifically to Fuglsang and Sky. Let’s begin.

Action
Today’s stage was not one we all looked forward to – it was a simple flat stage, and the only Mountain point was given out after few kilometers. Prior to the stage we heard Maxime Bouet had left the race, along with Jurgen Van den Broeck. During the stage we saw Nacer Bouhanni struggling, and he abandoned the race; along with a Swedish rider, who I’ll mention in the Fuglsang-section. The real action today was in the last 30 kilometers, primarily when Mark Cavendish crashed. It came as a shock to me, ’cause we didn’t hear of it until after he was back on his bike. He also had trouble in a roundabout, when cars weren’t paying attention. Cavendish had to work hard to get back to the front, but he did get back. In the Mass/Bunch sprint Cavendish was not lucky, his rivals Lotto-Belisol rode perfectly and got Greipel a great win. Cavendish was mad after the stage, perhaps due to the aforementioned problems – but I also saw a Lotto-Belisol Domestique blocking Cavendish in the bunch sprint. An angry Cavendish, that says it all today. Note that they created a gap in the bunch sprint.

Sky Pro Cycling
First note, Edvald Boasson Hagen is now second in the race, 3 seconds behind the New Yellow Jersey, Daryl Impey. Sky didn’t do a lot today, other than keep Froome and Porte safe in front of the Peloton. Geraint Thomas was back in front of the Peloton, a great sight to see – impressive. Nothing real important to report for Sky today, other than the fact that Edvald is dangerously close to a Yellow Jersey Sky don’t want to defend just yet. If Impey doesn’t perform tomorrow, Edvald is in the Maillot Jaune.

Jakob Fuglsang
Jakob lost the same seconds that Froome, Contador and Evans did – so no real problem there. The real problem for Jakob was his teammates. Andrey Kashechkin left the Tour on the Second Stage, and today Frederik Kessiakoff left the Tour as well. Not only is Jakob losing two teammates, he might lose the strongest Domestique he has, in Janez Brajkovic. Janez was injured severely at the end of the race, and lost a lot of seconds, thus solidifying Jakob as the real Astana Captain. Jakob Fuglsang, it’s almost all up to you. It is presumed that Janez will leave the Tour.

Jerseys
Daryl Impey is the new Maillot Jaune after Simon Gerrans almost handed it to him, he has 3 seconds to Edvald Boasson Hagen and 5 seconds to the real favourites. Orica GreenEDGE are still the best team, Pierre Rolland is still in the Polka Dot Jersey and Michal Kwiatkowski is still in the White Youth Jersey. Peter Sagan keeps the Green jersey, now with 159 points, but Greipel(130) and Cavendish (119) are still chasing him. The Tour will tomorrow be more exciting, and it’ll be interesting if Cavendish is ready for a potential bunch sprint tomorrow.

See you tomorrow

Remembering 54

The 22nd of May 2013 a great Bears Legend retired. I am of course referring to The Great 54. Brian Urlacher played Linebacker for the Chicago Bears from 2000 to 2012, and left the Bears for free agency in 2013. But after not getting a new deal with the Bears, Brian found it very difficult to find a new team. A sad thing for Brian who probably could have played for a few more years, and, in my opinion, should have been with the Bears for at least two more years before retiring. Unfortunately he was not signed to a new deal, and his last memories of his Bears career will not be good. He’ll remember the firing of Lovie Smith, and he’ll remember a, somewhat, poor treatment from the General Manager, Phil Emery.

However, he’ll also remember a great career with a storied franchise – my favorite NFL team, the Chicago Bears. Now, I’ll find it very difficult to say Brian Urlacher is the best Linebacker to ever play the game, and possibly even as hard to say he’s the best Linebacker in Bears’ History – but I won’t do that. Instead, I’ll tell you that Urlacher is the greatest Linebacker I’ve ever seen play. Keep in mind that I was born in 1993, and was introduced to the game around 2005-2007. So I haven’t seen Dick Butkus or Mike Singletary play – sad, but true.

Thankfully, I got to see Brian Urlacher – the best Bears player I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing play. Some would argue that he isn’t nearly as good as other Bears Legends like Mike Ditka, Gale Sayers, Walter Payton or the aforementioned Linebacker Legends – but he is the best Bears player I have ever seen play. And that’s good enough for me.

Thanks for everything, Brian. I’m glad you only ever wore a Bears jersey.

– I’m Jeffrey Rex.

Post Scriptum: Please don’t do a “Brett Favre”.
