REVIEW: The Book of Henry (2017)

Theatrical Release Poster – Focus Features

The following is a review of The Book of Henry – Directed by Colin Trevorrow

About a month ago, Colin Trevorrow was replaced by J. J. Abrams as the director of the forthcoming Star Wars: Episode IX. Why am I putting that information into my review of a completely different movie?

Well, because when The Book of Henry was released in the United States back in June, critics actually speculated that this film might cost Trevorrow his chance at directing a Star Wars movie. I think it probably did factor into Lucasfilm’s decision, because The Book of Henry really isn’t a good movie. Continue reading “REVIEW: The Book of Henry (2017)”

REVIEW: The Meyerowitz Stories (2017)

Release Poster – Netflix

The following is a review of The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) – Directed by Noah Baumbach

Adam Sandler is a really great actor, when he wants to be one. Every seven or eight years it seems like Sandler lands a role with which he manages to wow even his biggest critics. Normally, when I watch a new Sandler Netflix-film, I am greeted with lazy attempts at humor that sometimes becomes downright offensive in films like The Do-Over and The Ridiculous Six. REVIEW: MINDHUNTER – Season One (2017)

The following is a review of the first season of MINDHUNTER – A Netflix Original Series

Have you ever found yourself reading Wikipedia late at night? Perhaps your venture into a deep Wikipedia rabbit hole, so to speak, has led you onto a page about some terrifying, but very real monster, and now you can’t stop reading about the Dahmers, Bundys, and Zodiacs of the world. REVIEW: Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

Theatrical Release Poster – Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The following is a review of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (also known as, Salazar’s Revenge) – Directed by Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth film in the series, and, sadly, not all of them have been great. I’d even go as far as to say that there really are only two legitimately good Pirates of the Caribbean film — the first two films. The franchise has struggled to reach the heights of the first two films, and Dead Men Tell No Tales doesn’t change the pattern. The latest entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean-franchise is pretty bad. Continue reading “REVIEW: Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)”

Oscar Chances for BLADE RUNNER 2049 – Special Features #6

BLADE RUNNER 2049 is one of my favorite movies of the year thus far. Unfortunately, while most critics love the film, general audiences aren’t excited to see it. The film’s opening weekend in North America was alarmingly low at just $32m, and, to the best of my knowledge, it isn’t doing all that well in the rest of the world either.

But what everyone seems to agree on is the fact that it deserves some awards recognition. Today I want to figure out what it deserves to win, and how likely it is that the film will win golden statues in early 2018. Continue reading “Oscar Chances for BLADE RUNNER 2049 – Special Features #6”

REVIEW: The Snowman (2017)

British Theatrical Release Poster – Universal Pictures

The following is a quick review of The Snowman – Directed by Tomas Alfredson

The Snowman is based on Norwegian crime-writer Jo Nesbø’s bestseller of the same name, which was actually released ten years ago. The film follows Harry Hole (played by Michael Fassbender), a well-regarded detective with a serious alcohol problem, who is investigating the disappearance of a woman. When that woman turns up dead, Hole teams up with Katrine Bratt (played by Rebecca Ferguson) to find and stop a Norwegian serial killer who likes to build snowmen.

Updates and Changes – IJR Awards

I can’t believe the year is almost over. It feels like just a few months ago that Split opened to shock and surprise from critics and fans alike, who had no idea what the movie really was. But the year is almost over, and therefore I have to prepare for the next I’m Jeffrey Rex Awards. This year, I’ve changed the rules for one category, and I’m also adding a couple more categories to the list of awards.  Continue reading “Updates and Changes – IJR Awards”

Early Best Actress Predictions – Special Features #5

Same procedure as last week, folks! This week, I am taking a look at the Best Actress category at the forthcoming Oscars. Are Emma Stone, Kate Winslet, or the legend that is Meryl Streep getting another golden statue, or will someone new get to finally give a speech with an Oscar in-hand? REVIEW: Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Theatrical Release Poster – Warner Bros.

The following is a review of Blade Runner 2049 – Directed by Denis Villeneuve

Filmmaking is a business, and some business decisions just do not make sense. Indeed, some might say it makes no sense to make Blade Runner 2049 under the conditions that it has been. The original Blade Runner, which was directed by Ridley Scott, was originally met with mixed reviews and, to the best of my knowledge, it didn’t find much success at the box office.
