Disney’s D23 EXPO 2015 has given us a number of announcements from Marvel, Pixar, and Disney proper. But Lucasfilm also had a couple of things to reveal. For starters, it looks like Hannibal Lecter is joining the Star Wars universe.
Yes, let’s start with Rogue One. What was revealed as an Anthology film has seemingly been retitled as ‘A Star Wars Story’. The Gareth Edwards Star Wars-spinoff was rumored to star Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, and Forest Whitaker – and at D23 we got the cast list. Jones, Mendelsohn, Luna, Ahmed, and Whitaker were all confirmed, but there were a few additions.
Add Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alan Tudyk to the cast. I’m not too familiar with Yen or Wen, but Mikkelsen and Tudyk should need no introduction to western audiences. Danish Mads Mikkelsen, one of the very best European actors around, is currently starring in NBC’s Hannibal as the title character. Alan Tudyk, the Firefly alumnus, is best known for the aforementioned Joss Whedon show, but will star as a performance-capture character in Edwards’s Rogue One. I cannot be the only one thinking that Ben Mendelsohn and Mads Mikkelsen will play Imperial Officers, right?
In Star Wars third trilogy news: the director for Star Wars: Epiosde IX has finally been announced. We already knew that J. J. Abrams would not return for Episode IX, and Heroic Hollywood had reported that Colin Trevorrow would be the director of said film. Sounds like Heroic Hollywood were right. Colin Trevorrow, the Jurassic World director, has been confirmed as the director of Star Wars: Episode IX (releasing in 2019).
Finally, Disney announced that they’ll be opening a Star Wars theme park! This project is incredibly ambitious and exciting – concept art for the park can be found here.
