Han Solo is getting a solo film – Dagobah Day #3

I'm Jeffrey Rex' Dagobah Day

Welcome back to Dagobah!

Dagobah Day is a recurring opinion piece / news post on all things Star Wars. This time on Dagobah, I go over the details of the Anthology Film that was just announced a couple of days ago (July 7th 2015), and the actors that could play a ‘young’ Han Solo. Also, I wonder, what do they mean by ‘young’?

So, StarWars.com announced that the second Anthology Film is to focus on “how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley” – interestingly, however, this is supposedly not the project that Josh Trank was working on. And instead, this Solo-solo project is to be helmed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

If those names don’t mean anything to you, then don’t worry – you probably know of some of their films. They wrote and directed Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and The Lego Movie, directed 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, and the Brooklyn Nine-Nine pilot episode.

Lord and Miller’s The Lego Movie has a nice Star Wars scene, and they would clearly be able to direct everyone’s favorite scoundrel based on their Jump Street-films. My favorite note in the news update, however, was that the Kasdans are to write the screenplay. Perfect. It has also been announced that the film is slated for a May 25, 2018 release – meaning that it will be the movie between Episode VIII and Episode IX.

I love the fact that the Kasdans and Lord & Miller are to make this film – that’s perfect. However, do we really need a Han Solo Anthology Film pre-Original Trilogy? I don’t really think so. I’m still waiting for a Ben Kenobi on Tatooine Anthology Film, which we do need. That said, if they get the right ‘young’ Han and Lando (not announced, but we need Lando in this one), this can be spectacular.

Here’s the thing, though. How young is this ‘young Han Solo’? I’d, personally, prefer if they went with an actor around the age that Harrison Ford was when Star Wars came out in 1977 (35 years old). But, I do fear that they’ll be trying to go early twenties with this film – and while that could work, I don’t really like the sound of that.

The most important thing is that we get a good actor, not just a young actor, or a perfect lookalike. Get a good actor, it’ll always be obvious that it’s not Ford playing the part. So, for the rest of this Dagobah Day post I’ll be listing three candidates that I think could work for this Anthology Film.

The Young Actor – Taron Egerton

Since appearing in Kingsman: The Secret Service as ‘Eggsy’ Egerton has been rumored for just about every big young role. I loved Egerton in Kingsman, and I think he’d be the right choice for Solo if they went this young with the film. If you’ve yet to see Kingsman, then do that – he’s funny, ‘cheeky’, and gives a great action acting performance.

The Great Actor – Bradley Cooper

Everyone loves Bradley Cooper. Cooper is a great actor, and will possibly end up as one of the very best actors of the 2010s. There’s no doubt in my mind that he would be a great Han Solo. However, here’s the thing, you might end up just seeing Bradley Cooper on the big screen and not Han Solo.

I think it’s problematic to go with a household name, and Star Wars has always gone with the lesser known actors. So that’s definitely a hurdle, but he’s the best choice for the part actingwise.

The Right Actor – Jensen Ackles

Jensen Solo

He’s got the look. He’s a good actor. He’s, sadly, not a household name. And, most importantly, Jensen Ackles’s character on CW’s Supernatural has Han Solo-like charm – and if you’ve seen the show, I’m sure you’d agree that he could easily be our favorite scoundrel.

I believe he was considered for a Marvel Studios part once, so hopefully he’ll get considered for a Lucasfilm part as well. He’d work, I’m sure of it.
