In 2017, Warner Bros. released the film titled Justice League in theaters worldwide. This was a superhero team-up film that was supposed to be the third installment in a series of films set in Warner Bros.’ cinematic universe that has been dubbed the DC Extended Universe. The previous two installments — Man of Steel and Batman v Superman — were directed by Zack Snyder, who had essentially become the godfather, or the face, of the DC Extended Universe.

Snyder was also supposed to complete Justice League, but, due to a family tragedy, he decided to step away from the film and let Joss Whedon, the seasoned superhero filmmaker hired by Warner Bros. to replace him, finish the film. But Whedon and Snyder are very different filmmakers and they have different sensibilities, and, ultimately, the theatrical cut of Justice League was met with largely negative reviews. The final product lacked a uniform vision and tone, and it started to become clear that a lot of the essential material that Zack Snyder had planned for the film had been left on the cutting room floor.

DC Films: Where do we go from here? – Special Features #13

Remember that fantastic trailer for Man of Steel? The trailer that made it seem like DC and Warner Bros. would continue hot off the heels from the Dark Knight trilogy by introducing us to a breathtaking new Superman movie. Man of Steel was ultimately a disappointing beginning to a severely underwhelming cinematic universe. Continue reading “DC Films: Where do we go from here? – Special Features #13”

The Future of the DC Cinematic Universe – Detective Comics Saturday #5

DC Saturday - Rebirth

Detective Comics Saturday is back! On the first Saturday of every month you’ll now see me discuss topics related to DC Comics or the DC Cinematic Universe.

I’m so happy to be back writing about everything DC! Now, after the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we have to readjust and get ready for the next film in the DC Cinematic Universe (I refuse to call it the DCEU) – David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. But with two WB/DC films having been released – with both of them receiving mixed reviews (to put it nicely) – we might also have to rethink the future of the universe. So, today I answer four questions that I have been thinking about since I saw Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – let’s get to it! REVIEW: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

Theatrical Release Poster – Warner Bros.

The following is a spoiler-free review of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a Zack Snyder film.

Batman v Superman is finally here! Comic book fans have been wanting to see this film for decades, and moviegoers have been waiting for a proper sequel to Man of Steel since 2013. Somehow this film had to appease both audiences. My complicated history with Man of Steel has been heavily documented on this blog, and I don’t think I’ve really loved a Zack Snyder-film since his remake of Dawn of the Dead.

Needless to say, I was really worried about this film. Superman used to be one of my favorite comic book characters, and Batman still is one of my favorites – I want them to be given a proper treatment on the big screen. I just wanted to like it – that is all I wanted from this film. But, to be perfectly honest, I did not. At least not all of it.  Continue reading “REVIEW: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)”

Man of Steel – Polarizing #1

Polarizing

Polarizing is a new unscheduled opinion piece revolving around polarizing topics, shows, or films.

Man of Steel – the beginning of the DC Cinematic Universe – might be one of the most polarizing superhero films of all-time. At the time of writing, with 289 reviews counted, Man of Steel is at 56% on the Rotten Tomatoes ‘tomatometer’, meaning that it literally is a polarizing film with critics. Now, with its sequel Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice releasing in theaters next week, I thought I’d address one of the films that I really had a tough time having an opinion on.  Continue reading “Man of Steel – Polarizing #1”

25 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me

25 ThingsLately I’ve been thinking about this blog. A huge chunck of it is very much about what I like – and about what I think. But with that having been said, none of it is very personal. The closest thing to personal I’ve ever done have been my New Year’s Speeches – which I hope to continue for a very long time. So, today, I’ve decided to come up with 25 things you guys don’t know about me. I’ll try to steer clear of things already mentioned on the blog, but if I mention something you already knew, then please let me know. So, without further ado… Continue reading “25 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me”

REVIEW: Man of Steel (2013)

Warner Bros. Pictures poster for ‘Man of Steel’.

The following is the 3rd and final edition of my review of Man of Steel, a Zack Snyder film.

In a way, this film, and the experience of writing this review, has been somewhat of a difficult experience for me. If you look around the blog you’ll probably notice that I’ve been very critical of my original review of the film. The fact of the matter was that I was perhaps too hyped up for the film when I first experienced it, and my review ended up going ‘too easy’ on what was, to some extent, a problematic film.

The second edition of the review was a little bit more fair, but I didn’t love how it turned out. So, in anticipation for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), which serves as the sequel to this film, I decided to revisit the film, and review Man of Steel one last time.  Continue reading “REVIEW: Man of Steel (2013)”
