REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Wine and Roses”

The following is a recap and review of the first episode of the sixth and final season of Better Call Saul, available on AMC in the U. S. and on Netflix internationally. Expect story spoilers.

In the season premiere of the sixth season of Better Call Saul — titled Wine and Roses — Jimmy McGill (played by Bob Odenkirk) and Kim (played by Rhea Seehorn) continue with their plan to embarrass Howard Hamlin (played by Patrick Fabian) and ruin his reputation in an attempt to get an early payday from the Sandpiper case. Meanwhile, Nacho (played by Michael Mando) goes into hiding after the attack on Lalo’s home base in last season’s finale. Wine and Roses was directed by Michael Morris (his fourth episode of the show), and it was written by the series’ co-creator, Peter Gould.

REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Something Unforgivable”

The following is a recap and review of the tenth and final episode of the fifth season of Better Call Saul, available on AMC in the U. S. and on Netflix internationally. Expect story spoilers.

In the season finale of the fifth season of Better Call Saul — titled Something Unforgivable — Jimmy McGill (played by Bob Odenkirk) tells the truth about what happened in the desert to Kim (played by Rhea Seehorn), in the aftermath of Lalo Salamanca’s surprise visit. Meanwhile, Nacho (played by Michael Mando) meets Don Eladio (played by Steven Bauer). Something Unforgivable was directed and co-written by series co-creator Peter Gould, and it was also co-written by Ariel Levine.

REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Bad Choice Road”

The following is a recap and review of the ninth episode of the fifth season of Better Call Saul, available on AMC in the U. S. and on Netflix internationally. Expect story spoilers. 

In the penultimate episode of the fifth season of Better Call Saul — titled Bad Choice Road — Jimmy McGill (played by Bob Odenkirk) has returned with Lalo’s bail money, and now he has to come up with a cover story to protect him from further harm. But it isn’t easy to fool Lalo (played by Tony Dalton) or Kim (played by Rhea Seehorn). Bad Choice Road was written and directed by Thomas Schnauz, who has directed at least two episodes of every season of Better Call Saul, including Wexler v. Goodman also from this season.

REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Bagman”

The following is a recap and review of the eighth episode of the fifth season of Better Call Saul, available on AMC in the U. S. and on Netflix internationally. Expect story spoilers. 

In the eighth episode of the fifth season — Bagman — Jimmy McGill (played by Bob Odenkirk) travels south of the border to pick up Lalo Salamanca’s bail money. Bagman was written by Gordon Smith and directed by Breaking Bad creator, Better Call Saul co-creator, and El Camino-director Vince Gilligan.

REVIEW: Nobody (2021)

Directed by Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry) — Screenplay by Derek Kolstad (John Wick).

At this point, it feels like we’re being inundated with action-thriller films that are trying to ape what made John Wick a huge success and a competent film franchise on its own. While I think these kinds of films can be quite good and entertaining, I also think films like Gunpowder Milkshake or Atomic Blonde have largely missed the mark, so I have become more trepidatious with this action subgenre than I was initially. This is exactly why it was so refreshing to me that I greatly enjoyed Ilya Naishuller’s Nobody, which is yet another action-thriller in the vein of John Wick (also co-written by Derek Kolstad).

REVIEW: Little Women (2019)

The following is a review of Little Women (2019) — Directed by Greta Gerwig.

This is a movie that I have wanted to review for a very long time. As I often bemoan, in Denmark, distributors tend to theatrically release major Oscar-nominated films months after they have been released in the United States. This often means that I miss out on the conversations that these films bring up. It also means that, in this case, I couldn’t discuss the only film nominated for Best Picture that was directed by a woman during awards season for the 92nd Academy Awards. Now that I finally have my hands on a Blu-Ray of the film, which I bought on Amazon UK, I have had the chance to watch and review a film that my peers already have plenty of thoughts about. In the seventh episode of the fifth season — JMM — Lalo Salamanca (played by Tony Dalton) hires his trusted lawyer ‘Saul Goodman,’ and Jimmy McGill (played by Bob Odenkirk) and Kim Wexler (played by Rhea Seehorn) are married at the courthouse. JMM was written by Alison Tatlock and directed by Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul producer Melissa Bernstein, who, with JMM, makes a glorious directorial debut. In the fourth episode of the fifth season — Namaste — Jimmy McGill (played by Bob Odenkirk) has a meeting with Howard Hamlin (played by Patrick Fabian), Kim Wexler (played by Rhea Seehorn) tries to make Mesa Verde reconsider their plans, and Mike (played by Jonathan Banks) tries to make things right with his family. Namaste was written and directed by Gordon Smith, who has previously written several episodes of Better Call Saul. This is Gordon Smith’s directorial debut.
