HBO and PlayStation recently announced that Chernobyl-creator Craig Mazin will develop a series adaptation of the hit PlayStation game THE LAST OF US with Neil Druckmann, who was the writer and co-creative director on the original game. Druckmann is also one of the chief creatives working on the game’s highly anticipated sequel, THE LAST OF US: PART II. As I’ve definitely written before, THE LAST OF US is my favorite game ever made. Before I saw Ava DuVernay’s incredibly important and overwhelmingly powerful mini-series When They See Us, I never knew anything about the Central Park jogger case or the so-called Central Park Five. At the end of the series, I felt out of breath. I needed some air. DuVernay’s series is another excellent 2019 limited series true story that is so very bleak and absolutely infuriating, but it is also just as gripping as it is tough to watch. Ridley Scott’s long-awaited return to the Alien-franchise – Prometheus – offered up several surprises and was ultimately deemed a ‘let down’ by many fans of the franchise. The premise of the prequel film was, to an extent, at odds with fan expectations, but was nevertheless an admirable and ambitious attempt at rebranding a franchise that needed to feel fresh again. The following is a review of The Invitation, available in some regions on Vimeo via Drafthouse Films. I attribute it to 2016, due to the fact that it was only released at festivals in 2015 and had its official release in 2016.
This film wasn’t anywhere on my radar until very recently. I didn’t hear about this film until a few weeks ago, when I was watching Meet the Movie Press, and The Wrap‘s Jeff Sneider brought up this suspense thriller he had just seen.
