REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Gloves Off”

Better Call Saul - Reviewed

The following is a review of the fourth episode of the second season of Better Call Saul, available on AMC in the U.S. and on Netflix in Europe. Expect story spoilers.

In the fourteenth episode of Better Call Saul (“Gloves Off”), Mike goes on a mission for Nacho, someone gets beat up, and we see a couple of familiar faces return to the Vince Gilligan-Breaking Bad Universe. Gloves Off might’ve been the most well-acted episode of season two yet. Continue reading “REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Gloves Off””

REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Amarillo”

Better Call Saul - Reviewed

The following is a review of the third episode of the second season of Better Call Saul, available on AMC in the U.S. and on Netflix in Europe. Expect story spoilers.

Jimmy is slipping… In the third episode of the second season of Better Call Saul (“Amarillo”), Jimmy goes too far with the Sandpiper Crossing-case, and might irreparably damage his relation to both Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill and Davis & Main. Meanwhile, Mike is in-between jobs, as it were, and his family is calling for his help.  Continue reading “REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Amarillo””

REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Cobbler”

Better Call Saul - Reviewed

The following is a review of the second episode of the second season of Better Call Saul, available on AMC in the U.S. and on Netflix in Europe. Expect some story spoilers.

World’s 2nd Best Lawyer – after, what was, a decent episode in the season opener (“Switch”), Better Call Saul delivered a must-watch episode that both tested limitations and moved the overall plot along nicely. In the second episode of the second season, “Cobbler”, Jimmy says goodbye to the infamous Suzuki Esteem, Mike goes back to help a former client, and Jimmy shows us how he decompresses after work.  Continue reading “REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Cobbler””

REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Switch”

Better Call Saul - Reviewed

The following is a review and ‘recap’ of the first episode of the second season of Better Call Saul, available on AMC in the U.S. and on Netflix in Europe. Expect story spoilers.

Welcome back, Jimmy. You’ve been missed. It’s been more than ten months since the final episode of the first season of Better Call Saul aired on AMC. Better Call Saul was my favorite show of 2015, and I even loved its first season more than I loved the first season of the show that preceded it, Breaking Bad. Last year, I reviewed every single episode of Better Call Saul‘s first season, and gave a full season review – this year I plan to repeat that action completely. In the first episode of the second season, “Switch”, we learn what transpired right after Jimmy (played by Bob Odenkirk) started humming Deep Purple‘s “Smoke on the Water” in his yellow Suzuki Esteem.  Continue reading “REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Switch””

REVIEW: Better Call Saul – Season One

I'm Jeffrey Rex Episode Review - Better Call Saul - Season One
Expect Spoilers

When this spin-off from Breaking Bad was confirmed to be in development way back in 2013 I had my trepidations – I didn’t think it could work, I didn’t want anyone to mess with the legacy of something near-perfect. And the universe that Vince Gilligan had created with Breaking Bad was near perfect. But I was wrong about one thing: Better Call Saul‘s first season has only strengthened the universe – strengthened my attachment to the characters. REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Marco”

I'm Jeffrey Rex Episode Review - Better Call Saul - Marco
The following is a review of the tenth episode of AMC’s Better Call Saul, which premiered in Europe on Netflix this morning. Expect spoilers from the episode.

As the first season of Better Call Saul draws to a close, we see Jimmy McGill return to Cicero, Illinois, meeting old friends, and perhaps being put in a corner yet again. Who knows, we might even see someone book a ticket to Belize.

Before getting to the episode discussion and review I’d just like to note how happy I was to finally see Mel Rodriguez again – who was in the episode “Hero”, and in Community a couple of seasons ago. Continue reading “REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Marco””

REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Pimento”

I'm Jeffrey Rex Episode Review - Better Call Saul - Pimento
The following is a review of the ninth episode of AMC’s Better Call Saul, which premiered in Europe on Netflix this morning. Expect spoilers from the episode.

“Two McGill boys, side by side, storming the gates, righting wrongs, taking down the bad guys.”

In the penultimate episode of Better Call Saul‘s first season everything got flipped on its head, as Jimmy was toppling over – only to arise and finally know the truth that fans rightly have been speculating on.

REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “RICO”

I'm Jeffrey Rex Episode Review - Better Call Saul - RICO
The following is a review of the eighth episode of AMC’s Better Call Saul, which premiered in Europe on Netflix this morning. Expect spoilers from the episode.

In the eighth episode of Better Call Saul‘s first season, we finally got to see the McGills working together, in an episode where a con-man finally became a full-fledged lawyer. But did they go too far or are they golden?

RICO opens with a flashback. I’ve not really been that happy with all the flashbacks this season, but this one really worked. Seeing a nervous Jimmy passing the bar, only to be let down by Hamlin worked perfectly – I mean you hate the dude now, almost as much as Jimmy does. REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Bingo”

I'm Jeffrey Rex Episode Review - Better Call Saul - Bingo
The following is a review of the seventh episode of AMC’s Better Call Saul, which premiered in Europe on Netflix this morning. Expect spoilers from the episode.

Last week, we finally got to see Mike Ehrmantraut’s backstory – this week we see just how complicated Mike Ehrmantraut and Jimmy McGill’s partnership was when they just started working together. This includes another tightrope walk for Jimmy McGill, and Mike embracing the darkness we know him for. Continue reading “REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Bingo””

REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Five-O”

I'm Jeffrey Rex Episode Review - Better Call Saul - Five-O
The following is a review of the sixth episode of AMC’s Better Call Saul, which premiered in Europe on Netflix this morning. Expect spoilers from the episode, as well as minor spoilers from Breaking Bad.

Way back in late May 2009, we were first introduced to the character Mike Ehrmantraut – little did we know that today he’d be a fan-favorite character. Way back in 2009 he was somewhat mysterious, and he was so for most of his time on Breaking Bad. His dream of getting his granddaughter money was never truly fulfilled, due to the DEA, Walt, and just terrible luck in the final seasons.

When this show was announced, and he was announced in it, it excited me. We had heard stories about Mike, but Jonathan Banks’ character had been somewhat of a closed-book on the show – only ever showing sincere, heartfelt emotions around Jesse and his granddaughter. Finding out that this episode was about Mike left me intrigued. How did it turn out? Well, let’s take a look. Continue reading “REVIEW: Better Call Saul – “Five-O””
