In the second episode of HBO’s Westworld, which was released early (apparently, to avoid clashing with a US presidential debate), we experience the park from the perspective of a first-time visitor named William (played by Jimmi Simpson). Meanwhile – behind the scenes – Elsie Hughes (played by Shannon Woodward) fears that whatever happened to Abernathy may be contagious.

Westworld – produced by Jonathan Nolan, J. J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk, among others – is based on the science fiction film of the same name from 1973, which was written and directed by Michael Crichton. It takes place in a futuristic theme park, where guests – or ‘newcomers,’ as they are called – can interact with robots – or androids – in any way they see fit.

Everyone knows who Stephen King is. You may not have read his novels. Maybe you’ve only watched films based on his work. But you absolutely know who Stephen King is. When I was younger, I was introduced to Stephen King’s work through films and mini-series by my father who has always been a fan of Stephen King. The following is a review of Star Trek Beyond.
Hold on to something! Star Trek is back. While the ‘Abramsverse,’ meaning the universe created or rebooted after J. J. Abrams and Bad Robot started making Star Trek, has gotten a lot of criticism from fans of the original films and series, you cannot deny, though, that Abrams got the franchise back into the public memory with the excellent Star Trek from 2009 and Star Trek Into Darkness, a solid action sequel, from 2013.

J. J. Abrams Star Trek from 2009 made me interested in the franchise. It made me a Star Trek-fan. I love the 2009 film so much that Star Trek Into Darkness was my most anticipated film of 2013. I was reading message boards every day. I watched the trailers over and over. I was so ready to love the film. But ultimately it didn’t really meet my expectations. The following is a retro review of Star Trek, a J. J. Abrams film.
I wasn’t a fan of Star Trek before 2009. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. J. J. Abrams made me a Star Trek fan. I’ve since gone back and seen some of the shows, but this film is still what made me a fan, and still my favorite thing in the franchise. 2009’s Star Trek is fast-paced fun. It’s exhilarating. This is going to be a tough post for me to write. I had planned for this month’s Favorite Thespian to be Jared Leto, I had even written the entire post in preparation for today. But then something happened. Last night, one of my favorite thespians passed away. I was a big fan of Anton Yelchin, and when I heard that he had died I was in shock. I sat in silence for ten minutes or so. And when someone asked me what was wrong, tears started to rush down my face. I will miss Yelchin. So this month’s Favorite Thespians is in memory of him. The following is a review of ’10 Cloverfield Lane’, a Dan Trachtenberg film.
Let’s talk about expectations. The tagline of the film, “Monsters come in many forms,” is the truest representation of the film. With the original Cloverfield we were treated to a found-footage monster movie, but 10 Cloverfield Lane is a much more polished, suspenseful, and mysterious thriller.
