Box Office Predictions – September 2017

It (Warner Bros.); Kingsman: The Golden Circle (20th Century Fox); The LEGO Ninjago Movie (Warner Bros.)

September is looking pretty, pretty good to me. We’ve got a Stephen King remake I am incredibly excited for, a sequel to a surprise hit by Matthew Vaughn, and, well, another LEGO Movie. Let’s talk about how much money these films will make in their opening weekends.

NORTH AMERICAN OPENING WEEKEND PREDICTIONS:

  • It – Warner Bros. – September 8th, 2017 – $63 million
  • Kingsman: The Golden Circle – 20th Century Fox – September 22nd, 2017 – $40 million
  • The LEGO Ninjago Movie – Warner Bros. – September 22nd, 2017 – $35 million

Andy Muschietti’s It is something else. Everyone is talking about the movie. It looks like it’s going to be a historic opening weekend for It. I think it’s final opening weekend total will tower above James Wan’s The Conjuring ($41m) and might even best the opening weekend of Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island ($61m).

The first Kingsman film is one of the easiest action-comedies to rewatch in recent memory. It is such a great film. Sadly, I’m not sure the sequel will do as well as I’d like it to. It doesn’t really have a lot to compete with in its opening weekend (I don’t think Kingsman and LEGO are competing for the exact same audience). It should be fine, but I’ve got a bad feeling about this. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think The Golden Circle will make more than maybe 3-5 million more than The Secret Service ($36m) made in its opening weekend. I can’t wait to see the film.

Is The LEGO Ninjago Movie just another LEGO movie, or are people actually looking forward to it? I’ve enjoyed the trailers somewhat, but I don’t really have an idea of what Ninjago is. To me, this looks like a film most people will want to check out on VOD but not in the theaters. The LEGO Batman Movie made around fifteen or sixteen million less than The LEGO Movie did in its opening weekend, and I think it will be another decline for the LEGO film series.

Box Office Report

MAJOR OPENING WEEKENDS – August:

  • The Dark Tower – Sony / Columbia – August 4th, 2017 – $19 million (+2)
  • Annabelle: Creation – Warner Bros. – August 11th, 2017 – $35 million (+3)
  • The Hitman’s Bodyguard – Lionsgate – August 18th, 2017 – $21 million (+1)

I was incredibly close with my predictions this month. I’ll even go as far as saying I was ‘on the money.’ Not a lot to say here. Annabelle: Creation deserves to make a lot of money, and, well, The Dark Tower doesn’t. I haven’t seen The Hitman’s Bodyguard, so I can’t comment on the film — only to say that it made exactly as much as I expected it to.

THE BILLION DOLLAR CLUB:

  1. Beauty and the Beast – Disney – $1,262 billion
  2. The Fate of the Furious – Universal – $1,238 billion
Box office totals as of September 5th, 2017, according to Box Office Mojo.

Still only two films in the billion dollar club. However, Despicable Me 3 has somehow slowly, but surely, made its way towards the prestigious club. At the time of writing, it has made $997 million worldwide and should join the club soon. Man, people really love the minions, huh?
