Well. Well. Well. We finally have a title. And I think it’s an absolutely fantastic Star Wars title. Today I want to talk about how I interpret the title and the ‘red lettering’ of the teaser poster. It could be really straightforward, but maybe – just maybe – it hints at someone not many people see as a Jedi right now. Let’s get to it.
First up, let me apologize for not getting this post up yesterday. I really wanted to publish a post like this one on the same day that the title was announced. But yesterday, I needed to prepare for an oral examination, but I’m here now, and I’ve got plenty to say.
Okay, so what does it mean? Well, as I was quick to point out on Twitter, the plural form of Jedi is Jedi. So it could mean more than one or just one final Jedi. If it’s the plural form, then it probably either refers to Rey and Luke or to Luke’s fallen new Jedi Order.
Now, if it refers to the Jedi Order, then I’ve got a theory. While Ben Solo – or Kylo Ren as people call him now – turned to the Dark Side, he isn’t a Sith. And as Snoke revealed at the end of The Force Awakens, Ben hasn’t finished his Dark Side training yet. He’s essentially just a Dark Jedi. That fits with the title right?
Now, if you combine that with the ominous red lettering on the Star Wars title, then you could say that the title could be a reference to him possibly being the last Jedi at the end of the film, or that it refers to Ben Solo being ‘the last Jedi’ from Luke’s fallen Jedi Order.
Finally, there’s the simple, super straightforward way to look at it. Luke Skywalker is the last Jedi. Luke was even referred to as the last Jedi in the opening crawl for The Force Awakens. That’s the interpretation that makes the most sense, but then what does the red lettering mean?
Finally, Rian Johnson just posted the following on Instagram. I’m so excited.
If you have any theories, then please sound off in the comments!
