Mads Mikkelsen in Rogue One – Dagobah Day #20

Dagobah Day - 2016

Mads Mikkelsen is one of my favorite actors out there, and definitely my favorite Danish actor ever. We’ve known for a little while now that Mikkelsen is playing the father of Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones) in Rogue One. But we haven’t seen his character in either of the two trailers. This month, let’s talk about what we know about the mysterious Galen Erso.

Okay, so before we get into the specifics of the character, let me warn you. I’m going to be talking about Rogue One speculation and rumors that may be spoilers for the actual film. However, these potential spoilers only revolve around the Ersos and their roles in the universe. Nothing ‘earth shattering’ or new, but I’m just warning you in case you don’t want to know anything about the film.

Still there? Good. So, as I mentioned we haven’t seen Galen Erso in a trailer yet, but he has been shown in a picture. Also, the international trailer for Rogue One was the first to mention Mikkelsen’s character. So those are the only two things ‘set in stone’ that we know about Mikkelsen in Rogue One.

But Mikkelsen has spoken about the character publicly, here a quote:

“I spend a lot of time with [Felicity Jones] and she’s a wonderful actress. I play her dad at the time of Felicity and I play her dad when she’s younger, so we jump back and forth in time.” – Mads Mikkelsen.

The above quote indicates that Mads Mikkelsen’s character doesn’t die in a flashback or in the beginning, like I had been worried about for a while. Based on the international trailer and the above quote, I’d say that Galen Erso is taken by the Empire when Jyn Erso was younger, and that he becomes someone they have to get to during the film. Maybe, he’s like Leia in A New Hope. Like, maybe they have to save him from the Empire.

Now, we get to the potential spoilers. Supposedly, Galen Erso is a character like Oppenheimer. Like, he supposedly helped the Empire finish the Death Star project, but he now feels like he’s been a part of the creation of something awful and dangerous. This comes from Making Star Wars, which is always a great site for Star Wars news.

That Death Star ‘creator’ rumor has pretty much been confirmed, if the following Mikkelsen quote is to believe.

“[Galen] once invented something so beautiful, so fantastic that it could change the universe.” – Mads Mikkelsen.

So, now you’re caught up. This is all we know, so far. Are you as excited about Mads Mikkelsen’s character as I am? How much do you think he’ll be in the movie? Sound off in the comments.
