The following is a special Dagobah Day. Dagobah Day is normally released on the first Monday of every month.
So the Rogue One-panel was pretty cool. Gwendoline Christie moderated it, we got a pretty cool new poster, they released a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel, and the crowd got to see a special teaser trailer. But the biggest news from the panel was a huge mistake. Jiang Wen might’ve spoiled the film.
Let’s talk about Jiang Wen. Jiang Wen, a Chinese veteran actor, plays Baze Malbus in Rogue One, and, from what I’m gathering, that character will be paired up with Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe in this film. Anyway, I don’t want to spoil the movie for you, and, honestly, I’m a little upset that I got to hear what he said. But here it is. Turn away now if you don’t want to know. This is a pretty big spoiler.
Are you sure you want to read it?
Here we go. Jiang Wen was talking about his character, and while he really wanted to tell us that he has a big gun, the big reveal here was that Jiang Wen said that Donnie Yen’s character dies in the film. Now, this might’ve actually been a mistake. Maybe he misspoke. Maybe that’s not what happens.
Wen did say his English wasn’t very good. But here’s the thing: Donnie Yen’s reaction pretty much confirms it too. Oh and there’s another angle of the panel online that reveals Alan Tudyk’s complete reaction, which was somewhat amusing all things considered. Here’s a video of the entire thing. I don’t know if the panel video will be taken down, so watch it while it’s there, if you want to see what happened.
Now, this is pretty bad, and, as I mentioned, I didn’t want to hear that. But should we be surprised? Not really. This film is about stealing the plans to the Death Star. It’s pretty much what starts A New Hope. A lot of these characters will probably die. Still, that doesn’t mean we want it spoiled on a live-streamed panel promoting the film.
Oh but let’s just remember everyone makes mistakes. Jiang Wen is much better at speaking English than I am at Mandarin. That’s for sure. Don’t be mad at him.
