I am, by no means, a big fan of the Captain Marvel character, but I appreciate the love a lot of fans have for her. Still, this character means more to me as a result of this blog. The very first Marvelous Monday, way back in January of 2015, was about who could play Captain Marvel. I wrote about Katee Sackhoff, Emily Blunt, and Yvonne Strahovski. Now, we’re hearing that Brie Larson, star of Room, is in talks to star as Carol Danvers. Why is Marvel going for Larson, and why are we hearing this now?
Why Brie Larson?
This one is easy. It’s Brie Larson. Larson won the Academy Award for Best Actress this year, and Marvel would be interested in attaching her to any and all films they’re doing right now. Marvel Studios can get talent like this now, and there’s no reason why we should be surprised. I’d love to see Strahovski or Blunt, for example, play Danvers, but neither of them just won an Academy Award.
Why are we hearing this now?
Okay, so if you think this Variety exclusive came out at an odd time seeing as the film doesn’t come out until late 2019 (and there is no director attached to the film yet), then let me explain why we’re hearing stuff now. We are a little more than three years away from the Captain Marvel-movie, but remember that that movie is positioned in between what was originally called parts 1 and 2 of Avengers: Inifity War.
This leads me to believe that she’ll probably play a part in one of those films, and probably either show up, for the first time, in the first Infinity War or in one of the upcoming movies in 2017 or 2018 (Probably not Doctor Strange in 2016, but who knows?). The theory right now is that they need to have Carol Danvers in a scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, or in the post-credits scene for that film. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is actually shooting right now, so they probably want to film a Danvers-scene soon if she’s in it.
All that having been said, though, she has not been confirmed to star as Carol Danvers for Marvel Studios. So, for now, we just have to wait for an official press release or something. They’ll probably wait to announce anything as long as they don’t have a director for the film. Maybe we’ll hear more at San Diego Comic-Con.
Would you be happy with Brie Larson as the newest Marvel hero? Sound off in the comments.
