Trailer Review: Assassin’s Creed (Official Trailer #1)

The Assassin’s Creed trailer is finally here! I’ve been pretty excited for this film for a while as it was on my ‘My 10 Most Anticipated Film of 2016‘ list. I’ve played 7 of the current 9 games in the Assassin’s Creed main series of games. Justin Kurzel is directing the film, and both Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard star in the video game adaptation: it’s basically a Macbeth-reunion. The Kurzel-Macbeth was great, and I am so excited to see if this will be the first truly great movie based on a video game. So, let’s discuss the trailer.

Before talking about what we see in the trailer, let’s go over what we hear and what is said in the trailer. I’ll try to guess who says what at certain points, but hopefully it helps you in understanding what is going on. During the trailer, we hear Kanye West’s “I Am A God,” which was the worst part of the trailer for me, by far. That song just didn’t fit with the mood of the trailer, in my opinion. With that out of the way, let’s now go over what is said:

CALLUM LYNCH (Michael Fassbender): Where am I?

SOPHIA RIKKIN (Marion Cotillard): At 6pm yesterday evening, you were executed and pronounced dead. You no longer exist.

CALLUM LYNCH (Michael Fassbender): What kind of prison is this?

SOPHIA RIKKIN (Marion Cotillard): It’s not a prison. You are about to enter the Animus. What you are about to see, hear, and feel are the memories of your ancestor, who has been dead for 500 years.

CALLUM LYNCH (Michael Fassbender): What do you want from me?

SOPHIA RIKKIN (Marion Cotillard): Your past. Welcome to the Spanish Inquisition.

CALLUM LYNCH or AGUILAR (Michael Fassbender): We work in the dark to serve the light. We are assassins.

AC Trailer 1 - 1

Okay, so this looks like we see what happened with Callum Lynch, the present day character that Fassbender plays, prior to being taken in by the Rikkins and Abstergo Industries. It looks like he was sentenced to execution by lethal injection.

AC Trailer 1 - 3

Speaking of Abstergo Industries… Here we have the classic Abstergo-logo. People who haven’t played any of the games don’t exactly know a lot about Abstergo, so I won’t say anything as it could be a spoiler, even though I’m pretty sure they’re going to be changing a lot in the movie version.

AC Trailer 1 - 4

Okay, so we don’t actually hear this guy say anything, but this is Jeremy Irons, who supposedly plays Alan Rikkin, which probably makes him the father of Cotillard’s character. I believe it’s been confirmed that Alan Rikkin is the CEO of Abstergo in the movie.

AC Trailer 1 - 5

This seems like a slight nod to the fans, which the final shot of the trailer is too. Eagles are pretty important in the games. I think the name of the protagonist of the original game, Altaïr, was supposed to mean eagle, or something like that. And I believe Aguilar, which is the name of the ancestor that Fassbender also plays, has a similar meaning. Very cool.

AC Trailer 1 - 6

This is a pretty cool action shot. If the action from Macbeth is anything to go by, this film will be gorgeous.

AC Trailer 1 - 7

Now, I could be completely wrong, but here it goes. I think this scene is showing Aguilar about to be burned at the stake, but either he breaks out, or another member of the assassin brotherhood breaks him out. The slow-motion is pretty cool, and was used pretty well in Macbeth. I can’t wait to see this scene.

AC Trailer 1 - 8

The final shot I want to talk about from the trailer is this one that once again reminds you of the game. In the games, you jump from tall buildings into piles of hay. It is called the ‘leap of faith’, and has also been used, in the games, as part of an initiation process before you become an assassin.

All in all, I think this is a pretty good trailer. The only thing that I really disliked was the addition of the Kanye West song. It just doesn’t feel appropriate. Other than that this is a solid trailer. The movie looks great. I like what I’m seeing. I think this is going to be a great movie.
