Theatrical Release Poster – Columbia Pictures / Lionsgate
The following is a review of Sicario: Day of the Soldado — Directed by Stefano Sollima.
Some movies don’t need sequels. Sure, I know what you are going to say. No films truly need sequels, which is true. But when almost the entire creative team behind a successful standalone film is switched out and replaced when the sequel is to be made, alarm bells ring. I become worried that a new creative team might ruin what made the first film so great. (more…)
The following is a review of Wind River – Written and Directed by Taylor Sheridan.
When Taylor Sheridan gets one of his screenplays made, you pay attention. The first two films in his so-called ‘frontier trilogy’ — Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario and David Mackenzie’s Hell or High Water — were amazing films that both ended up on my top ten films of the year lists in 2015 and 2016 respectively. And although Sheridan’s presumably last film in his frontier trilogy — Wind River, the first in the trilogy that he has directed himself — won’t be among my ten favorites of 2017, this modern western is still one hell of a movie. It’s time for the second – and final – half of the nominations for the 2016 IJR Awards. This time it’s all about movies and documentaries. I’ll announce the winners of all categories on February 20th, before announcing my top ten films of 2016 on February 22nd. (more…)
2016 is almost over, and I really can’t believe it. It feels like the summer movie season just ended, but here we are at the end of the year. That also means that we need to start looking forward to some of the films that are released next year. I, obviously, don’t know if any or all of these will be good, or even great, but with this list I’m trying to point out which films I’m super excited for. (more…)
The following is a review of Hell or High Water – directed by David Mackenzie.
Former actor Taylor Sheridan – a WGA Award-nominated screenwriter – is beginning to make quite a name for himself. 2015’s Sicario, which Sheridan also wrote, was easily one of the best films of that year, and now, with Hell or High Water, he may have outdone himself. At the very least, I believe director David Mackenzie has made one of the best neowestern films that I’ve ever seen out of Sheridan’s original script. (more…)
The following is a review of ‘Sicario’, a Denis Villeneuve film.
I had a lot of expectations going into the theater to watch Sicario. The spectacular cast isn’t the only thing you should be excited about. Denis Villeneuve, the director, is one of the hottest new directors in the world. His last three films (Prisoners; Enemy; Incendies) have been some of my favorites in the years that they’ve been released, and Villeneuve is directing the hotly-anticipated Blade Runner sequel soon. In short, I expected Sicario to be one of the best films this year – I was not disappointed.
