88TH ACADEMY AWARDS: REACTION – MOTION PICTURE THOUGHTS #7

MOTION PICTURE THOUGHTS

Leonardo DiCaprio – Academy Award-Winning Actor! Finally! The 88th Academy Awards was a great show, with a lot of great winners. Chris Rock was a really solid host, and, as a whole, it probably was one of the better Oscar shows in recent memory.

The best musical performance probably was Lady Gaga’s “Til It Happens To You,” which should have won an award tonight, but I digress. I also really enjoyed The Weeknd’s “Earned It.” Speaking of performances, I thought the In Memoriam-section was really well done, even though I think it was a weird choice to have Dave Grohl play “Blackbird” during it.

It was great to see Mad Max: Fury Road get a lot of awards recognition, and for a second there I thought it would go all the way like Return of the King. EX_MACHINA winning Best Visual Effects was a great surprise, it was definitely one of the most thought-provoking films of 2015. Spotlight ended up upsetting The Revenant in the end, and that was a nice surprise to end the night on. Of course, the moment people will be talking about is Leonardo DiCaprio finally winning an Academy Award. Finally!

Okay, so I’m a Star Wars fanboy, but I’m perfectly fine with The Force Awakens not getting any awards when it is up against films like EX_MACHINA, Mad Max: Fury Road, and a legend like Ennio Morricone. It’s an honor to be nominated, as they would say.

No, I was much more annoyed with the categories ‘Best Supporting Actor’ and ‘Best Original Song’. In my opinion, both Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation) and Benicio Del Toro (Sicario) should’ve been nominated in the former, and when Sylvester Stallone didn’t win for his performance in Creed I was absolutely stunned. And I’m not thrilled with SPECTRE‘s “Writing’s On The Wall.” Also, I, personally, preferred Fassbender’s performance in Steve Jobs to DiCaprio’s in The Revenant, but I am a fan of them both, so I cannot complain.

As for the best moment? I’d be interested to hear yours. For me, it was probably seeing Jacob Tremblay’s reaction to C-3PO, R2-D2, and BB-8. Star Wars: The Force Awakens didn’t win any awards, but it won the heart of a young actor, it seems.

Awards season 2015/2016 is over! But before you know it it’ll be September yet again, and the race begins again. I had a lot of fun this awards season, and I can’t wait to write about another later this year. Awards season 2016/2017 – so close, yet so far away.

What left you upset after the show? Sound off in the comments.
