If you’ve been reading my blog recently, then you know that I’ve been very excited for the newest Netflix Original Show Marvel’s Jessica Jones. I published a Why You Should Be Excited For Jessica Jones–Marvelous Monday, and recently published my season review.
If you don’t have the time to look through an entire season review, then here’s what I thought (spoiler-free, of course): “[…] I [loved] the first season for how it really pulled off the sinister feel that Kilgrave had to emit, as well how they handled some very rough topics. The core characters all worked, and the run of episodes from episode 6, AKA You’re A Winner!, to episode 9, AKA Sin Bin, was a thrill to watch. A second season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones is a must […]”
But just in case you wanted to know more about what other reviewers think about the newest Netflix project, I’ve compiled the thoughts of some very well-respected critics.
- First up is Matt Zoller Seitz who, while writing for Vulture, states that: “Yes, Jessica Jones is as good as you’ve heard. Better yet, it’s enjoyable even if you’ve never heard of the main character and know nothing of the comics it’s based on.”
- Second up is Mike Hale who, while writing for the New York Times, states that; “Jessica Jones isn’t a procedural mystery, but it has the heart – the storytelling beats and essential optimism – of a very good broadcast-network show. It might not be the best idea to binge-watch it – it feels as if it should be watched weekly.”
- Finally, one of my favorite critics, Eric Goldman (IGN Movies), states that: “It only gets better and more involving as it continues.”
One or two critics don’t matter as much as they used to do, now review and rating aggregators rule – so, let’s take a look at some of the most popular ones (following scores are based on the ratings present at the time of writing):
My favorite review aggregator (yes, I have a favorite) is definitely Rotten Tomatoes. On RT Marvel’s Jessica Jones is ‘certified fresh’ with a tomatometer of 91% and an average rating of 7.8/10. Then, on Metacritic, the show has a metascore of 81 – indicating universal acclaim. Even IMDb loves Marvel’s Jessica Jones! The new show actually has an 8.9/10 rating based on 11,965 user ratings.
People are pleased with the first season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones, and I have no doubt that Krysten Ritter’s character will become a fan favorite quickly, even if she only appears in the The Defenders mini-series and her own show. I highly recommend Marvel’s Jessica Jones.
