Suicide Squad is one of the most intriguing cinematic comic book-based projects out there, due to the involvement of the Joker and Harley Quinn – as well as the star power of Will Smith, Jared Leto, and Margot Robbie. Today the Comic Con trailer was released officially, so let’s look at what David Ayer & Co. have come up with.
Suicide Squad is about Task Force X a group of incarcerated villains going on dangerous missions in exchange for pardons or less time in prison. On the team we have Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Slipknot (Adam Beach), and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman). Somehow Joker (Jared Leto) is added to the mix – and that’s all we know. So let’s look at the evidence.
First up is the first look at Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress, though it looks like this is prior to her becoming the Enchantress – from when she was just June Moone. Throughout this trailer we see shots that look like different origin stories for Deadshot, Enchantress, Harley Quinn etc.
There are better shots of Harley Quinn than this one, but notice her cage. Outside of her cell, you have a steel cage with barb wire on top of it. They seem very worried about Harley, or maybe they’re worried about someone getting to Harley. In any case, this is a very weird cage for her to be in. Very intriguing. By the way, notice the cover version of ‘I Started A Joke’ – I absolutely love it.
There is another shot like this one, featuring what looks like Deadshot and his daughter – perhaps before he became a criminal. I think it’s a good decision to focus on their origin stories, but if they have to go over each and every one of them, then that might take a while.
To me this looks like this is Ayer’s take on Harley Quinn’s origin. Shock treatment by the Joker, terrifying. In case you were wondering, you can see that it is the Joker by looking at his ‘Haha’-tattoo on his arm, and the purple surgical glove which can also be seen in the final shot of the trailer.
Notice the same glove and tattoo as before. This all looks very cool, but I’m still not sure about the look of the Joker in this film. At least the actor that they got for the part is top notch. I really like this trailer, but I think the number of shots that look to be of origin stories is worrying.
