Marvelous Monday #8 – The Illuminati

I'm Jeffrey Rex' Marvelous Monday #8
So yeah – weird title if you don’t read Marvel Comics. What I want to write about today is the idea of The Illuminati-group in the Marvel Comics Universe. Minor spoilers for the current New Avengers run may appear, but absolutely no spoilers post-Original Sin crossover. Also, I probably need to explain why we probably won’t ever see them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (even though Phase 3 would be perfect for its inception).

What is Marvel’s Illuminati?

Originally created by Brian Michael Bendis and Steve McNiven, the Illuminati is a group of superheroes that operate in the darkness, a group that hides from the rest of the universe – the Avengers, X-Men, whatnot. What’s so special about the Illuminati is that almost every group is represented. Mutants, humans from all around the world, a Sorcerer Supreme, an Inhuman, and an antihero.

Every individual in the group provides some sort of expertise, and represents the various types of people out there in the Marvel Comic Book Universe. Some of the most interesting storylines involving the Illuminati has to do with keeping the ‘order’ secret, and deciding who makes the decisions. Therefore you probably understand how political this comic book team can be. Which is why Jonathan Hickman is so good at running it at the moment.

Why won’t we see them in the MCU?

From New Avengers #1

There are a couple of points to be made her, but I’ll keep it simple. The main members of the Illuminati have been people like Prof. Xavier (w/ Beast replacing him at times), Namor, Iron Man, Captain America, Doctor Strange, Mr Fantastic, Black Panther – and I probably forgot someone.

Cap’s here, but you’d probably have to keep him out of it due to the nature of the group a la the current New Avengers-run. Stark, T’Challa and Strange are going to be in the universe – so they could kind of / sort of build a version of it. But Namor, Xavier and Mr Fantastic are key members that they’d miss.

Some might argue that Bruce Banner could take a spot, and maybe Hank Pym – but I’d argue that they are too good for an undercover group of ‘heroes’, thus being the same problem that Cap poses. So, unless they replaced Namor with Loki – and Xavier/Mr Fantastic with… yeah they’d be difficult to replace, but hey – Hawkeye and Quicksilver will probably need something to do. If they cannot work all of this out, then we won’t see this group on the big screen.

Do you like Marvel’s Illuminati? Sound off in the comments. Stay Marvelous!
