Fantastic Fest 2026 | Preview

Later this month — from September 17th to September 24th — the 21st edition of Fantastic Fest takes place at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, TX. Over the years, the beloved film festival all about genre film has featured world premieres of such films as There Will Be Blood, Zombieland, and Apostle, as well as the U.S. premiere of Obsession, which now, just a year later, has taken the world by storm following its theatrical release. Now, while I won’t be in Austin, I have been approved for remote coverage of the festival. Thus, I plan to post standalone reviews of select films over the course of the week of the festival, which I am very much looking forward to.

In this preview, I’ll highlight some of the major premieres, screenings, and titles. But this article also dives deeper into Fantastic Fest‘s fascinating line-up, as I have prepared a list of ten films that have caught my eye based on intriguing loglines, the creative team involved, or, in certain cases, the cast that appears in the film. Although it is unlikely that I’ll get to see all of them during my remote coverage, these are some of the films that I think you should seek out if you are going to be in Austin, TX this month.

Top Ten Films of 2023 | Flashback

Looking back years from now, I think 2023 will be remembered similarly to how people remember 2007 and 2019. It was an incredible year for cinema, and it was therefore incredibly hard to cut this list down to only ten (with one honorable mention). Some of the films that almost made it onto the list, but came up just short, include All of Us Strangers, Fallen Leaves, The Promised Land, Infinity Pool, and La Chimera. It’s wild to think that even though I really loved Barbie, it wouldn’t even have found its way into a top twenty for the year — that’s how good of a year for film 2023 was.

Sanctuary (2023) | REVIEW

Sanctuary is a dark comedy and psychosexual thriller from film critic-turned-director Zachary Wigon. Released in 2023, following an initial premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, the film follows Hal (played by Christopher Abbott), the insecure presumptive heir to his late father’s wealthy company, as well as Rebecca (played by Margaret Qualley), who Hal has hired to be his dominatrix. During one of their sessions, Hal intimates his decision to end their mutually beneficial relationship, as he is now supposed to take on bigger responsibilities as the figurehead of a major company. She is clearly offended by the development and is considering leaving. However, instead, she desires to launch into a go-for-broke attempt at blackmail.
