Proposition for Kevin Feige – July 2014

Nova.

Hello and welcome,

As you may’ve noticed this post is for Kevin Feige. Now you may ask who he is. Kevin Feige pretty much is in control of the destiny of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phases, he is the one sitting next to Whedon and co., the man with the plan. I will be trying to come up with various ideas for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and these are the first propositions I present. Starting with the introduction of Sam Alexander, the new Nova, in Phase 4.

The Troubled Teen – Sam Alexander – Nova

Liam James – Nova?

Now, Sam Alexander isn’t the fan-favorite Nova – and I know this – but he is the one Marvel Comics is trying right now, and could easily make money for the Disney owned studios. The character of Sam Alexander would be the youngest leading man for Marvel, and has already been discussed somewhat. I believe there were rumours of Ty Simpkins’ character in Iron Man 3 actually being the introduction of a kid-Nova, like Sam Alexander. However, we’ve seen nothing of him since. Instead I propose two actors for the role of Nova, both being actors I’d label as ‘kids’  for a kid-character (which might actually just be tossed to the side, a la Radcliffe as Harry Potter). First and foremost, I’d like to propose Liam James (originally pictured above) of ‘The Way Way Back’ & ‘2012’ fame. James was born in 1996, and would therefore be at an acceptable age for Sam Alexander… And he looks the part too. I like the awkward portrayal he put forth in ‘The Way Way Back’, and I think his character from the aforementioend movie has some interesting features as a leading man, in a world where he (Nova) is not in charge. Now, I’ve also noted Kodi Smit-McPhee who is having a great year, starring in the new Planet of the Apes-film.

The Leading Men – Dr. Strange & Black Panther

With Marvel slowly, but surely, losing Downey Jr. as their main man – they’re going to need to replenish their cast of stars. The rumours of a Black Panther movie have been heard for a long time, and I suspect we’ll have it confirmed at San Diego Comic Con 2014. For the role of Black Panther, I propose Chadwick Boseman of ’42’ fame. I think this is a guy most people want, even ahead of a big name like Chiwetel Ejiofor, and that’s saying something. In any case, this is a character the MCU needs – we’re waiting, Feige.

As for Dr. Strange? Well, the movie’s confirmed – it’s got its most important ‘staffmembers’, in a director and Screenplay-writers. Now we need a leading man – someone to give us a new mature Marvel CU… Hopefully. Jared Leto’s been rumoured, and I’d like him – but I propose another guy, someone who’s a household name, of sorts. Joaquin Phoenix of ‘Walk the Line’ and ‘Her’ fame. Not only is this a household name, he also has the presence of a sorcerer supreme.

Hopefully Feige will listen… Who knows what we’ll see at Comic Con, and what about the Credit Sequences of Guardians of the Galaxy?

What Am I Reading? 4 of 6

The following post is the fourth of six revolving around what I am reading (mostly comics) in 2014. Every post will cover two months, and therefore this one will cover July and August.

So, I recently had a tough time reading more comics – I fear that maybe I’ve stalled completely because of my very fast pace reading and buying comics on comixology. With that being said, I am absolutely certain that my main focus, if I return to comics soon, will be Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy and the event ‘Original Sin’, the latter of which I have begun, but I am not caught up completely.


Also, I’ve started reading the Pulitzer-Prize winning ‘American Lion’ by Jon Meacham. It focuses on President Andrew Jackson, a president that is rather interesting – and I feel this will take much of my time in the coming months, as I am on my summer break. Not much else to report today, as I am really just relaxing with the FIFA World Cup.

I will be leaving for a festival soon, might blog about it – but while I am gone, please do recommend comics or books for me to read.

What Am I Reading? 3 of 6

The following post is the third of six revolving around what I am reading (comics) in 2014. Every post will cover two months, and therefore this one will cover May and June – though I’ll comment on a twist of events in April.

So, in the months of March and April I basically decided to stay clear – stay away from comics. Somehow it had lost its hold on me, or maybe I was just trying to move back in University-mode. Though, something incredible happened in April – as I started using Comixology a lot more, and returned into comics in a big way!

I decided to read up on Scott Snyder’s run on Batman (New 52), and I’ve got to tell you – it’s absolutely amazing. As of the end of April I believe Comixology has 30 issues up, and I’ve managed to read every single one. The opening arc is very interesting as we dive into uncharted waters with a court of incredible origin, this sets up a disgruntled Bat who must then come across an old friend in need of… Let’s call it a scary form of ‘romance’, bromance or whatever. Read it and you’ll know what I’m talking about. I’d say the first 20 issues are possibly the best comics I’ve ever read, plotwise, but I must admit my interest sort of failed as Edward Nygma was introduced in the Zero-Year arc. I really don’t have any interest in this current arc, and that’s really scary for me.

Then it hit me, I hadn’t read Marvel for a while – and that’s where my roots are at. I decided to go into something easy to go through, and that became Hickman’s run on Avengers and the New Avengers. This peaked my interest, especially the latter run, and inspired me to update my Guardians of the Galaxy-issues and try to go through the Infinity-Event from the angle of the event books, the Avengers, the New Avengers and the Guardians. I’ve yet to do this completely, and therefore I predict that’s what I’ll be doing in the coming months.

In addition to the Infinity-storyline I also really want to read up on ‘Superior Spider-Man’, its premise is really interesting and out there – and that really gets me. I feel repowered in my search for a comic book home. Thank God for Comixology, DC and Marvel.

What am I reading? 2 of 6

This second part of my readings will focus on March and April. And you might be shocked a bit… ‘Cause I don’t plan on reading comics these months. Don’t be sad, I’ll get back to that soon enough. Currently, I’m just being drawn into the world of The Catcher In The Rye, and multiple other books I bought last month.

Hopefully, the comics will pull me back in.

What am I reading? 1 of 6

The following post is the first of six revolving around what I am reading (comics) in 2014. Every post will cover two months, and therefore this one will cover January and February.

My ‘Getting Back Into Comics’-post received good feedback. I was adviced to return to my Spider-Man roots, as well as to dive deeper into the world of Gotham. I’d say that I followed both advices somewhat. You know I am still in the process of reading the Guardians of the Galaxy, but I have yet to pick up the latest issues of it, therefore I will not go in-depth with that series in this post. So, Drax & Co. will have to wait for now. However, I did get to pick up some Marvel comics.

Yes, Carnage. I opened my former post with a picture of the said villain, and though I did not get to read more about Carnage in a traditional setting, I am now happily returning to Carnage – this time as the sole villain in this series. To be completely honest, I have not gotten around to reading this in January, but it will be read during the month of February, as I try to, not only return to comics, but to return to Marvel fully.

Owls, Owls, Owls.

Moving on now to something that blew me away. The New 52 was really interesting to me, it would allow me to get re-familiarized with some of the great heroes and villains of the DC-universe. I believe Scott Snyder is doing this Batman-run, and it really is amazingly entertaining for me. The opening issue has an ominous feel to it, and it just fits so well into my current mood and, of course, to the universe itself. Every cliffhanger I’ve read has been of the highest quality, and I can honestly say that without overestimating its level of writing. This series alone has me excited for DC Comics as a whole.

I’d love to go further into the story of the New 52 Batman, but I will not be spoiling anything in this post. Perhaps I will have a spoiler-filled review of Batman sooner, not 100% yet, though.

Getting Back Into Comics

So, here’s the thing. I’m a man that loves superheroes and superhero movies, I love playing games – science fiction or superhero games in particular. Obviously, I was a comic book fan… Once.

Man, I really wanted Carnage in the Raimi-movies… Can we get him in the Garfield ones?

I think the first comic book I read was an Amazing Spider-Man comic book, and quickly I began loving that character as a kid. Mary Jane, Peter Parker, Carnage, Venom – the whole nine yards. See, I picked them up whenever I saw a new comic in the stores – but I was not really out in stores that often when I was a kid, really. That meant that I had no real consistent read through, that persisted for a long time – and would eventually lead to me leaving the comic book world.

What replaced comic books for me? Simple, I got into superhero animated tv-shows. Now, this time around I got to get a real story from start to finish, thankfully. The early 90s cartoons of the X-Men, Batman, and, especially, the Spider-Man animated TV show formed me as a comic/superhero fan, a lifelong one at that – later I would watch some episodes of an Iron Man cartoon and a Justice League cartoon, both I remember enjoying. This was how I would spend my weekends, watching shows like these w/ my favorite characters of both Marvel and DC.

Meanwhile, movies became more and more important for me in my youth. My father is a movie buff, and as a result, so did I become. On a sidenote he is focused on horror and action only, whereas I would say I value the more meaningful films much more. Well, the Donner Superman movies were introduced to me in the late 90s, around the time that I got into the cartoons. Now, I had not seen anything from Superman before, but I was aware of him. Basically, though, these movies formed my early opinion on him… I liked him. I would eventually lose interest in him as a character, but not before having read comics about him! I vividly remember my father taking me to this comic collector in Copenhagen, and while my dad would talk with the owner (who, meanwhile, was drinking Carlsberg Beer) I would be reading Superman, Batman and Robin, and Spider-Man comic books – when it was time to leave, my dad told me to pick out 3 or 4 comic books, and he would buy them for me. Great memories for young Jeffrey Rex.

And then there’s Thor…

Movies really came to the front when Marvel entered. The cinematic universe as well as the stand alone X-Men and Spider-Man movies would rebring my childhood heroes into my life, this was when I got pulled away from comics. The movies were more than good enough, they would pretty much leave me satisfied. When the Avengers introduced the idea of bringing Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy into their Cinematic Universe I was forced to retrace my steps as a comic fan – but I never really got around to truly reading comics again – until I heard about Rocket Racoon from the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Who would’ve thought a talking Racoon would bring me back?

The Guardians of the Galaxy was a nice surprise for me – never had I heard of them – yet they were instantly pushed to the top of my reading list. Mid-2013 I took the jump back into comic books. The Guardians of the Galaxy were given a new set of comic books, and were reintroduced with Iron Man – this was it for me, I needed to read this. I instantly opened an account at Comixology and bought it. The first piece of comic book material for me since The Walking Dead. I’ve yet to read through all the available comic books for this team, but it has brought me back to my childhood – and I am already contemplating what to get next – what to read. Obviously, The New 52 is tempting, and I have wondered if I should read possibly Green Lantern, Nightwing or Deathstroke. Still, Marvel is interesting, and I am wondering if I should go with the All-New X-Men comics.

So, what do you say? Have any suggestions for me as I return to comic books? Anything I must read?
