Film-Related New Year’s Resolutions: 2024

Poul Bundgaard, Ove Sprogøe, and Morten Grunwald in the Olsen Gang-films (Nordisk Film) — Robert De Niro in Michael Mann’s HEAT (Warner Bros.) — George Lazenby in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (United Artists).

Whenever a new year begins, people bring up the same tired resolutions that most of them can never live up to. Some want to lose weight, some want to travel, while others want to quit smoking. Well, what I want to do is make a list of films that I want to finally watch or that I want to finally take the time to write full written reviews for. So, what is on this film nerd’s list of film-related New Year’s resolutions for 2024? Well, let’s have a look.

New Year’s Resolutions: The Watchlist

During the next twelve months, I will try to finally see the films listed below that have been on my watchlist for quite some time. Perhaps they will even be reviewed, but that would not be a part of this series of New Year’s Resolutions (so that’s a strong ‘maybe’). I’ve listed twelve films so that, in theory, I could watch one for each month, if I wanted to do that.

  • “All About Eve (1950),” directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
  • “La Jetée (1962),” directed by Chris Marker.
  • “8 1/2 (1963),” directed by Federico Fellini.
  • “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964),” directed by Stanley Kubrick.
  • “Les demoiselles de Rochefort (1967),” directed by Jacques Demy.
  • “Frenzy (1972),” directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
  • “Don’t Look Now (1973),” directed by Nicolas Roeg.
  • “La Nuit américaine (1973),” directed by Francois Truffaut.
  • “Come and See (1985),” directed by Elem Klimov.
  • “Babettes Gæstebud (1987),” directed by Gabriel Axel.
  • “Heat (1995)” directed by Michael Mann.
  • “Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000),” directed by Bong Joon-ho.

New Year’s Resolutions: Reviews…

These are all films that I have already seen before, but they are also ones that I really want to write reviews for. Some of them have been on my backlog for years. I haven’t included every unfinished review that I want to finally complete, but I’ve listed the most interesting ones so that I push myself to prioritize those films rather than just write about beloved franchises like Star Wars and the Lord of the Rings, which I’ll probably get around to naturally without having to set it as a goal. I’m still working my way through reviews of Bond films, and I want to get to the Roger Moore era, therefore I’ve listed the Lazenby film and the remaining Connery flick below. In addition to this, I’m also setting the goal to review all fourteen Danish live-action Olsen Gang films.

  • “The Apartment (1960),” directed by Billy Wilder.
  • “Olsen-banden (1968),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “Olsen-banden på spanden (1969),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969),” directed by Peter R. Hunt.
  • “Diamonds Are Forever (1971),” directed by Guy Hamilton.
  • “Olsen-banden I Jylland (1971),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “Olsen-bandens store kup (1972),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “Olsen-banden går amok (1973),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “Olsen-bandens sidste bedrifter (1974),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “Olsen-banden på sporet (1975),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “Olsen-banden ser rødt (1976),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “Olsen-banden deruda’ (1977),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “Olsen-banden går i krig (1978),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “Olsen-banden overgiver sig aldrig (1979),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “Olsen-bandens flugt over plankeværket (1981),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “Olsen-banden over alle bjerge (1981),” directed by Erik Balling.
  • “The Fly (1986),” directed by David Cronenberg.
  • “Olsen-bandens sidste stik (1998),” directed by Tom Hedegaard and Morten Arnfred.

Those were my film-related goals, and I am pretty optimistic about living up to them. Please write your own goals below in the comments (or tweet them my way on Twitter), if you have any film-related New Year’s Resolutions for this year.
