Sad news coming out of Hollywood today, as the Willis family has put out a statement confirming that their patriarch, Bruce Willis, one of the biggest male action stars in Tinseltown for the last thirty-five years has decided to step away from his acting career due to recent health issues and the fact that he has been diagnosed with aphasia.

The Willis family statement reads in full:

“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities. As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him. This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support. We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him. As Bruce always says, ‘Live it up’ and together we plan to do just that.”

Recent ‘industry insider’ rumors had indicated that Bruce Willis may have been going through something quite difficult, and this statement appears to partially confirm those rumors. In recent years, Willis has appeared in a string of B-movies in spite of the outpouring of love and excitement following his surprise appearance in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, which has puzzled fans and critics alike, and this news puts our collective understanding of his puzzling recent career decisions in a new light. It now makes a lot more sense. It has, for example, been suggested that he has appeared in several straight-to-video B-movies for the purpose of making money for his family while he was still able to work.

Bruce Willis, now-aged 67, is a screen icon who is arguably one of the most quotable action movie stars for his appearance in the Die Hard films, in which he will live forever as the true Christmas action hero. At his very best, he has been a terrific action movie leading man capable of adding a lot of comedy to his performances. But he has also proven himself as a fantastic dramatic leading man in films like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, one of the best superhero films ever made. He has given us unique and priceless movie memories throughout his career in films like Die Hard, The Last Boy Scout, 12 Monkeys, The Fifth Element, Armageddon, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Looper, and more.

This is devastating news, and my thoughts are with the Willis family. I wish them all good health, good fortune, love, and strength. I hope that he realizes how much of an impact he has made in his career. As we now know, he is struggling with health issues, but for us movie fans he will always be unbreakable. Thank you for all the memories, Bruce.
