Let’s talk about the Super Bowl 51 Trailers and TV Spots

Stranger Things Super Bowl

Super Bowl sunday has come and gone, and the New England Patriots are ‘world champions’ after winning Super Bowl 51. But that’s not what I want to talk about here. Every Super Bowl sunday always gives us these really great TV Spots for our favorite future films or shows, and this year was no different. Let’s take a look at the best and worst teasers of the night.

Just so there’s no confusion. These are just the movie trailers and TV spots, and not the Super Bowl commercials (But if you’re in the mood for a fun Super Bowl commercial, then I really enjoyed the Bai-commercial with Timberlake and Walken.). But I digress, let’s get to the trailers.

Ghost in the Shell (2017) – Big Game Spot

There aren’t really a lot of new shots here, if you’ve already seen the previous full-length trailer. This is just a little highlight reel to get people excited about the movie. It’s definitely going for the Lucy-audience, and it’s going to be interesting to see how it does at the North American box office. I’m not really super interested in the film (I can’t tell you anything about the anime either), but it doesn’t look bad.

Transformers: The Last Knight (2017) – Extended Big Game Spot

Have we not had enough of the Transformers yet? No? Okay then. I guess it looks fine, but I can’t really get excited about these films anymore. It’ll probably make a billion dollars worldwide, but I’m not interested. Remember when Linkin Park had songs in these films? That was exciting as a fan to know, at the very least.

LIFE (2017) – Big Game Spot

This should be something I’d love. Gyllenhaal and Reynolds in a science fiction film. But there’s just something that I can’t quite put my finger on. I’m not as excited for this as I should be. I feel like I need to know more about it, and the full length trailer didn’t make me fall in love with it either.

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) – Pre-Game TV Spot

I love how this TV spot makes fun of Fifty Shades of Grey (or Fifty Shades Darker). I don’t really care about this film too much, as I didn’t fall in love with the first John Wick when I saw it a while back. But this TV spot actually got an emotional response out of me, and it’s the first of these trailers to do so.

A Cure for Wellness (2017) – “Take the Cure” – SB51 Commercial

This is a movie I’m looking forward to quite a bit. It looks like Shutter Island, it feels like Shutter Island, and I love Shutter Island. This is an unconventional TV spot and I really like it.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 (2017) – Extended Big Game Spot

Look out! I tried guys – Nothing could get me more excited about this film. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the best superhero universe films ever made, and one of the funniest blockbuster successes of all-time. And Baby Groot may be cute, but Drax once again stole the show for me.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) – Extended Look

I feel like a new Pirates film is coming at exactly the right time for it to do well. Maybe I’m wrong. It’s a nice little teaser, but I do think they need to focus more on Will and Jack in future trailers to really get people to see the film. We know it’s going to look cool, get us interested in the characters again!

Logan (2017) – “Grace” – SB51 Commercial

I love the musical choice here. This is one of those films I just know is going to get me emotional, so even though I don’t think there’s a lot new in this commercial (except for the quick shot with Caliban), it does get me really excited about the film.

The Fate of the Furious (2017) – Big Game Spot

I’m really sorry, but I just don’t care about these films anymore. Furious 7 was it for me. That’s how this series should’ve ended.

Baywatch (2017) – Big Game Spot

I think this is going to be a really funny film. It’s going for the 21 Jump Street feel, I think, and that’s fine with me. I love the Rock, so this film does intrigue me. And I think it’s going to be fun to see him and Efron together here.

Stranger Things: Season 2 (2017) – Super Bowl Ad

Yes please, and thank you! Stranger Things was one of my favorite shows of 2016, and I’m really excited to see more. It was a huge success for Netflix, and they’re looking to make it even more successful and popular in season two. I loved this commercial, and I particularly enjoyed seeing the group in Ghostbusters uniforms. Fantastic.

I think that’s it? Let me know if I missed something. For me, Stranger Things and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 were the standout teasers, but the John Wick: Chapter Two teaser did put a smile on my face.

What was your favorite Super Bowl TV Spot or Trailer? Sound off in the comments.
