The following is a spoiler episode review of Sherlock: Series 3, Episode 2 – The Sign of Three
The first time I saw The Sign of Three I really didn’t like it all that much. My main gripe with the episode was how the episode was paced, but when I rewatched it recently it didn’t seem like as big a problem. This time around all I could think about was how pleasant, different, and funny it was.
Funny how?! Easy now, Tommy DeVito. Obviously, an episode about John’s wedding had to be somewhat heartwarming, and this episode really had it all on that front. Warm smiles, tears, and hugs. But this episode didn’t stay away from the Sherlock we knew. Both ‘The Bloody Guardsman’ and ‘The Mayfly Man’ were really great stories, which, of course, would be solved in the very same episode.
Speaking of Sherlock’s best man speech, how great was that? I could definitely see some people be really annoyed with how they toyed with the Sherlock Holmes characters here. He might’ve been a bit too silly and nervous for some, and the stag night was very, very… Different for the show. But I actually really liked it.
I really enjoyed how they paired Sherlock up with Janine (Yasmine Akram), but it really hurt to see Sherlock leave the party without a dancing partner. There was something really bittersweet about how they ended the episode. The writers revealed a pretty big future for the Watsons, but Sherlock doesn’t really fit into that plan.
If I were to mention one tiny thing that did feel very out of place, it would be how Sherlock recounted a number of cases that we are never to know anything more about. I didn’t dislike this choice, but I think I would have liked it more in a Christmas Special, or any type of celebratory episode parodying itself. Come to think of it, a lot of this episode felt like it was parodying the show – and thus might be a wasted opportunity when you remember that this episode consists of 33% of series 3.
